In just his sophomore campaign for the Oaks, Eric Lopez proved himself a force to be reckoned with in the 165 pound weight class.. The Turlock, Calif. native spent a total of six weeks in the national rankings, placing as high as second, but found himself unranked entering the NAIA National Championships. This proved to be a non-issue to the confidence of Lopez who went on to place the highest of any Menlo wrestler competing and earning the right to call himself an All-American.
Lopez started off a perfect 3-0 in day one with a 17-5 major decision, a 7-3 decision and a 6-2 decision to advance to the semifinals and earn All-American status. With his sights set on the 165lb national title, Lopez continued to dominate in the semifinal match winning a 7-5 decision to become the only Menlo wrestler to advance to the finals. In the finals, Lopez and Grand View's Jimmie Schuessler locked up in an instant classic that went down to the wire. Lopez tallied an escape and a take down before Schuessler responded with an escape to bring the score to 3-1 leading into the final two minutes of action. It was then that Schuessler escaped and took the offensive, scoring the match-winning takedown and holding on to win the title with a 4-3 decision. Lopez earned a second place finish for his impressive 4-1 record at the National Championships.
