Menlo freshman Cady Chessin has made noise on the mats all season long for the Lady Oaks and she continued to do so in St. Louis this weekend where she claimed a second place finish at 123 pounds in her first trip to the WCWA nationals. As a team, Menlo earned 34 total points for a 13th place finish out of 18 teams.
It all got started on Friday afternoon when Chessin pinned Missouri Valley's Christy Powell in just 1:14 and followed it up with another decisive win via pin, this time in 1:59 over Kayla Bartosch of King University. That set the freshman up for a chance to compete for a national title in day two of the event on Saturday. Chessin drew Wayland Baptist's Tarkyia Mensah in the semifinal match and delivered with one of her best performances of the weekend, earning her a 12-0 tech fall to advance to the finals.
She drew a tough-test in the finals in two-time junior world team member and No. 1 ranked wrestler in the country at 123 pounds, Sarah Hildebrandt. Seeking her first career national title, Hildebrandt came out strong but the Menlo freshman answered the call; constantly putting Hildebrandt in tough positions and scoring early. Unfortunately, Hildebrandt's experience proved too much as she pinned Chessin at 2:22 to claim her first career national title. The runner-up finish earns Chessin All-American status and provided 25 team points to the Lady Oaks' cause.
