Troy Lakin entered the tournament ranked third in the nation and put together a great overall performance with just one bump in the road finishing 6-1 overall. Lakin began the tournament with a tech fall win over John Altieri of William Penn (Iowa) before claiming at 12-5 decision victory over Keegan Hessler of Morningside in the second round. That set him up against #7 James Flint of Lindsey Wilson for the first time this season. Unfortunately for Lakin, his hopes for a national championship came to a close in the quarterfinals when he dropped a tough 5-4 decision to Flint…but he would later get his revenge. Lakin came back on Saturday for the third session of the tournament and tore through his competition, picking up a major decision victory over Christian Clary of Campbellsville, a 9-7 decision victory over #9 Jake Sinkovics of Cumberlands and a 4-3 decision over familiar foe, 4th ranked Luke Schlosser of Great Falls. That set up a rematch between Lakin and James Flint in the third place match on Saturday afternoon. Lakin got his revenge in the form of a dominating 11-3 major decision victory to claim third place and his first All-American honor. He finished the season with a 28-7 overall record.
