FRESNO – A pair of victories from senior Joe Garcia highlighted the Menlo College men’s wrestling team’s efforts Wednesday as the Oaks fell to NCAA Division I Boise State, 36-3, and Fresno State, 33-13, in a dual-meet competition hosted by the Bulldogs at the North Gym.

Menlo, ranked eighth nationally in the most recent NAIA poll, fell behind quickly to the Broncos in the opening dual as Cory Fish earned a 4-1 decision against freshman Mike Rodriguez at 125 pounds before senior Alfonso Paez fell 6-2 to Scott Jorgensen at 133.

Garcia posted an 8-2 decision against Boise State’s Jordan Brock at 141 pounds but the Oaks were held pointless the remainder of the dual.

Rodriguez dropped an 8-5 decision to the Bulldogs’ Cory Borges to begin the second dual but the Oaks quickly reined in the lead with victories from Paez (dec. 4-0) and Garcia, who earned a 13-4 major decision against Fresno State’s Garrett Spooner.

Menlo forfeited its bout at 149. Senior Kyle Bickford fell to the Bulldogs’ Charles Jones at 157 (dec. 9-4) before Shane Seibert posted a 13-1 major decision against Robert Davis at 165. At 174, Gary Nelson accepted a forfeit victory for Menlo but the Bulldogs collected a technical fall win and two falls to close out the match.

The Oaks host a four-team dual competition Sat., Jan. 14 with Montclair State (N.J.), the University of Great Falls (Mont.) and the University of Indianapolis at Haynes-Prim Pavilion beginning at 9 a.m. The 2006 Menlo College Invitational will follow that event on Sunday, also commencing at 9 a.m.
