SANTA CRUZ, CA – With an extra inning nightcap victory, the Menlo College Oaks baseball team completed a three-game sweep over Bethany University today at Harvey West Field. The Oaks clinched a 6-3 win in the nine-inning opener followed by an 8-6 11 innings victory in the scheduled seven-inning second game.
Bethany got on the board first with a single run off two hits in the third inning of the closer. Menlo answered with a four-runs in the next at bat. Senior Jeff Brown hit a single to left center. Menlo hit three consecutive doubles courteous of seniors Will McLoughlin and Chris Budelli and junior Rob Monderine. Senior Robert McDonald hit a single to score Monderine.
The Bruins scored two runs off a home run and a single in the fourth inning.
Menlo extended their lead in the sixth off a double by Brown to score senior Matt Medina who reached on a walk. Brown advanced on a ground out by McLoughlin and scored on a passed ball.
Bethany tied the game with two-run in both the sixth and seventh innings.
In the eleventh inning, McLoughlin lead off with a right field single and Monderine connected on a sacrifice bunt to advance McLoughlin. The Burins intentionally walked Budelli. McDonald hit his tenth double of the season to score McLoughlin and Budelli to give the Oaks an 8-6 lead.
The Bruins hit a leadoff single to begin the bottom of the eleventh. Sophomore Brian Phillips (4.1 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 7 SO) answered with a two strikeouts and drew a ground out to first to secure his first victory of the season.
In the first game, the Oaks scored four runs in the top of the fifth to break a 1-1 tie. Monderine connected on a one out single up the middle. Senior Chris Budelli and Cowgill earned back-to-back walks to load the bases. Senior Robert McDonald hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Monderine. Junior Robbie Nelson crushed a three-run homerun to right center to give the Oaks a 5-1 lead.
Bethany added a run in the sixth inning and both teams added a single run in the ninth.
Nelson (3-5, HR, 4 RBI) and McDonald (3-6, 3 RBI, 2B, SB) led the Oaks in game one and two respectively.
Menlo (16-8) travels to Tacoma, Washington on April 5th and 6th to compete in a three-game series against Pacific Lutheran University.
