Tonight the Oaks traveled to Walla Walla, Washington to take on the Missionaries of Whitman College. Menlo came into tonight looking to snap a two game losing streak and gain some momentum for the trip. Although a close game from start to finish Whitman came out on top 77-72.
The teams played a tight match in the first half with neither team going head by three points in the first six minutes of the half. Menlo lead by eight points, their largest lead of the half, with 12:27 left to play with a layup from Tyler Rajnus to make the score 18-10. However, Whitman held on and brought the score within one at 10:07.
The teams continued to fight for every point but in the end Whitman led at the half by only two points and a score of 40-38. Julian Harris was personally responsible for more than half of Menlo's points with 18.
In the second, Whitman pushed ahead early in the second gaining a seven point lead at 18:35 from a layup by Justin Artis. Swiftly Menlo went to work in the paint and tied the score at 14:00 from another layup by Rajnus to make the score 50-50.
A series of missed shots by Whitman and recovered rebounds by Menlo had the Oaks dominating the next seven minutes and up by eight with two successful free throws by Rajnus at 7:12 to make the score 57-65. However the Missionaries clawed their way back and squeaked by Menlo to win by five and a score of 77-72.
The Oaks were 75 percent at the free throw line tonight making 12 of 15 attempts and shot 48.2 percent from the field.
Harris led the Oaks in points with 22 and five rebounds. Rajnus had 10 points and four rebounds and Tim Tatum had 10 points and led the team in rebounds with seven.
Menlo will travel to Idaho to go up against Lewis-Clark State College for rematch to avenge their loss last Friday at home. Tip off is at 7pm on Saturday.
