ATHERTON, CALIF. Closing out the Winter Classic Menlo took on Lewis and Clark College this afternoon. Coming off the tough match yesterday Menlo was looking to prove they can win.
The teams went back and forth with points for the entirety of the first tying the score six times. The Pioneers earned a slight lead with 1:31 left to play off a free throw to make the score 34-41. By the end of the half Menlo closed the gap to only three points and the score at the end of the first stanza was 38-41. The Oaks offense was on fire shooting 72 percent from the field and 55 percent from outside the arc.
The second started much like the first with both teams trading points and keeping the score close and tying the score three more times. With about seven minutes left to play the Oaks ran into some foul trouble giving the Pioneers a chance to gain a lead. Lewis and Clark scored seven to push themselves to a 14point lead. The lead was enough to hold off the Oaks and have the Pioneers win it 66-80.
Erika Garcia led Menlo in points with 17 with Brittany Taylor close behind at 14 points and Jenna Marinaro had 12.
Menlo will play next on December 29 and 30 in the annual Peninsula Classic. They will take on Johnson and Wales of Colorado at 6pm on Dec. 29 and Judson College on Dec. 30.
