ATHERTON, CA - Three Oaks scored double digits as Menlo claimed a 53-51 victory over NCAA Div. II Hawai’i Pacific University tonight at Haynes-Prim Pavilion.
Menlo held the lead most of the contest but was not able to shake off the Sea Warriors. In the final eight minutes, the largest point difference was six points by the Oaks.
With twelve seconds left on the clock, senior Brandon Rogerswas fouled in double bonus and sent to the free throw line. After making his first shot, Rogers missed his second and the Sea Warriors grabbed the rebound and brought the ball to half court and called a timeout. With 9.6 seconds left on the clock and Hawai’i Pacific’s ball, Rogers slapped the ball out of junior guard Kamron Alborz to prevent the Sea Warriors from getting a last second shot.
Senior Israel Torres achieved his first double-double with 10 points and a season high 11 rebounds along with two block shots. Leading the Oaks in points, juniors Cody Christensen and Bryon Wesley both finished with twelve each.
In head to head comparisons, the Oaks outrebounded the Sea Warriors 34-29. Menlo shot 50% (4-8) from behind the arc to Hawai'i Pacific's 41 percent (7-17).
“I'm extremely proud of the effort our team put forth tonight,” Menlo Head Coach Brandon Laird commented after the game. “We competed for 40 minutes and did an outstanding job defensively. We had great contributions from a number of players and earned a very, hard-fought victory.”
The Oaks(3-4/0-0 Cal Pac) open their Cal Pac season hosting Dominican University at California this Saturday. The Lady Oaks compete at 5:30 p.m. and the men follow with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
