VALLEJO, CA – With only 17 seconds left in the game, sophomore guard Chris Cobb hit a three-pointer to take the Menlo’s first lead of the second half in the 65-62 comeback victory over Cal State Maritime Academy tonight at Mayo Hall.
With 21.4 seconds on the clock and down by two points, Menlo’s Brandon Rogers stole the ball and fired it ahead to Chris Cobb for a three-pointer. Maritime’s Dejournett Wyatt attempted a desperation shot with 4 seconds. Senior Aaron Gentry grabbed the rebound and passed it to junior Bryon Wesley who drew the foul, sending him to the line in double bonus. Wesley dropped both of his baskets to seal the game, 65-62.
Cobb registered a career-high 21 points making five for seven from behind the arc. Gentry earned his first double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds and Wesley added 10 points and three boards.
Down 41-26 entering the second half, the Oaks shot 56% from the field and three-point line to fuel the thrilling comeback. Menlo outrebounded their opponents for the eighth time this year, finishing ahead of the Keelhaulers 37 to 24.
"The guys never got rattled and were able to execute the game plan in the second half," commented Head Coach Brandon Laird, "Freshman David Renfrow's defense was a huge factor in this win."
With the win, the Oaks improve their record to 6-5 on the year (2-1 Cal Pac). Menlo’s next contest will be this Tuesday at Pacific Union. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
