This Week: The Oaks (6-7/2-3 Cal Pac) are coming off a 66-70 overtime loss to William Jessup who is undefeated in Cal Pac play.

Scouting the Bruins: Bethany University (2-17/2-5 Cal Pac) earned their fifth defeat on Saturday against Cal State East Bay, 78-87. Players to Watch: Senior Earnest Williams is currently leading the conference in scoring and is 7th in rebounding (21.9 ppg., 5.8 rpg.); senior John Bell (13.1 ppg. 14.2 rpg.).

Scouting the Oaks: Menlo has either tied or out-rebounded their Cal Pac opponents in every game. Sizzlin Oaks: Senior Aaron Gentry broke the Menlo College most rebounds in a single game on Saturday with 20 against the Warriors (13.6 ppg., 11.2 rpg.); sophomore Chris Cobb is leading the conference in 3-point percentage with 44%, (7.6 ppg., 2.5 rpg.); junior Bryon Wesley has achieved double-digits in almost every game and is currently the Oaks’ scoring leader (15.1 ppg., 5.1 rpg.) .

Cal Pac Conference Notes: After finishing fourth last year in the Cal Pac, the Oaks are picked to finish second in the Cal Pac Coaches Preseason Poll behind Holy Names, last years Cal Pac Champions. Menlo is currently holding 6th place in the Cal Pac Conference standings.

Menlo History: The Oaks have won two Cal Pac Championships and made two appearances in the NAIA Tournament, the last one in the 2001-02 season.

Last Meeting: The Oaks pulled off an 80-76 victory over the Bruins to break a four game losing streak on February 4, 2006.

About the Coaches: An assistant the past three seasons, Brandon Laird was elevated to Menlo College’s head men’s basketball coach this past June. Laird, a UC-Davis graduate, inherits a program that showed dramatic improvement between each of his three seasons as an assistant, capping the run with a 17-11 showing during the 2005-06 campaign. Under Laird’s assistance, the Oaks also shined in the classroom. During the 2005-06 school year, Menlo accumulated a 3.2 cumulative team GPA and eight Oaks were named to the college’s Dean’s List.

Dan Mooney began his service with Bethany College in December of 2002 as a volunteer, joining the administrative staff as the asst. to the vice president, as well as the men’s and women’s basketball coach. Dan brings with him a wealth of basketball knowledge to pass on to both the men’s and women’s programs. He has had an extensive basketball career, from his college experience at University of New Paltz in New York, to his professional career with various stints on both NBA and CBA teams. Dan rounded out his eighteen-year career playing in Germany with various German teams over a thirteen-year period, in which he was a member of five league championship teams.
