SAN JOSE - Menlo did what it could to stay competitive, but couldn't match the size and athleticism of San Jose State in a 95-50 exhibition loss to the NCAA Div. I Spartans on Thursday night.
Sophomore Ari Goldman led the Oaks with 13 points in 21 minutes, making 5-of-8 field goals. Freshmen Logan Shoffner and Mike Stone netted 10 points apiece. In all, 13 players saw the floor for Menlo with 10 playing at least 11 minutes.
San Jose State had five players in double figures, led by Tim Pierce and DeVonte Thomas with 17 points each. C.J. Webster added 13 points, DaShawn Wright had 12 and Justin Graham 10. Thomas and Webster each finished with a double-double.
The Spartans outrebounded Menlo 48-20 thanks to a height advantage at nearly every position throughout the game. San Jose State made 58.6 percent of its field goal attempts while the Oaks were limited to 35.2 percent, though they shot an impressive 42.9 percent from three-point range.
San Jose State was picked to finish third in the Western Athletic Conference in the preseason coaches' poll and returns all five starters from a team that went 13-19 last season. The Spartans lost 10 games by single digits, however.
Menlo opens its season on Nov. 21 against NCAA Div. II San Francisco State at the Ron Logsdon Classic hosted by Sonoma State. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
