ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - A late first-half surge by Sonoma State proved to be the beginning of the end for Menlo College as the Oaks fell to the Ron Logsdon Classic hosts 73-46 on Saturday night.
Nearing the end of a competitive first half, the Seawolves scored nine consecutive points over the final 2 minutes, 29 seconds, to take control. Menlo was never within single digits again as Sonoma State was able to pull away after halftime.
The Oaks struggled offensively for the second time in as many games against a NCAA Div. II foe, shooting 26.2 percent from the field and registering just one scorer in double figures.
Menlo didn't trail the Seawolves until over five minutes had elapsed and used a 9-3 spurt to trim a seven-point deficit to one before Sonoma State's half-ending run. Logan Shoffner made four free throws, Kyle Adams sunk a pair and Julian Harris made a 3-pointer to pull the Oaks within a point at 25-24.
Adams led Menlo with 11 points and 10 rebounds, making 9-of-10 free throws. Harris added nine points, five rebounds while Shoffner and Craig Haberlein each scored six points. James Sandoval led Sonoma State with 10 points.
Menlo, 0-2, hosts College of Idaho on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Haynes-Prim Pavilion. Sonoma State is now 1-1.
