Men's Basketball - Sat, Dec 20, 2008
HONOLULU - After a 2400-mile journey, Menlo College was at its very best from just under 21 feet from the basket in a historic 71-56 victory over No. 5 Rio Grande at Hoop N Surf Honolulu on Friday night in men's basketball.
The Oaks had never beaten a top five team, but shook off their first half offensive struggles with a barrage of 3-pointers that put Rio Grande away. Menlo has now won three straight games after starting the season with six consecutive losses, leaving little doubt that it will be a factor in California Pacific Conference play.
Menlo, which beat CSU-East Bay on Wednesday night before flying to Hawaii, needed a half to warm up against the Redmen, but was way too much for 5th-ranked Rio Grande to handle once it did.
After making just 2-of-11 3-pointers in the opening half, the Oaks were 8-for-10 from long range and 13-for-18 from the free throw line in the second half. Menlo nearly doubled its first half output after halftime, scoring 47 in the period compared to 24 in an even first half.
Julian Harris scored a career-high 26 points for Menlo in 28 minutes of action. Harris was 6-for-11 from 3-point range and made all four of his free throw attempts. Point guard Chris Cobb finished 3-for-6 on 3-pointers, scoring 14 points and dishing out five assists.
Brandon Cochran added eight points and six rebounds, Kyle Adams had eight points and five rebounds, and Tim Kees chipped in six points and five rebounds for the Oaks.
Rio Grande shot 47.9 percent from the field, but were outscored 47-18 by Menlo from the free throw line and behind the arc combined. Aaron Drakeford and Brett Beucler scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Redmen.
Menlo (3-6, 2-1) plays at BYU Hawaii Saturday at 7:30 p.m. local time. Rio Grande, who previously defeated then-No. 4 Cedarville, is now 11-3.
