ATHERTON, Calif. – A dozen players scored and a 25-3 first-half run broke the game open as Menlo College defeated Golden State Baptist 72-44 in an exhibition game on Tuesday night inside Haynes-Prim Pavilion.

No Oaks player scored more than 11 points or played more than 25 minutes, but a team effort was more than enough for Menlo to run away in a hurry. With the score tied at 6-6 following a sluggish start, Menlo needed eight and a half minutes to reel off a 25-3 spurt that put the game away.

Senior point guard Chris Cobb ignited the run with a 3-pointer just more than five minutes into the game as Menlo scored 11 straight thanks to a pair of baskets from Jason Logan, a Julian Harris field goal, and two free throws from Brandon Cochran. Golden State Baptist’s Jordan Fanara then had a three-point play for the only Bears points during a span of almost 10 minutes.

Cochran and Logan Shoffner each made a pair of free throws, Nick McCullar scored inside, Ari Goldman sunk a 3-pointer off a Harris assist, and Tim Kees drove for a basket before Ryan Dung ended the run with a 3-pointer off another Harris dish. Menlo led 31-9 with six minutes, 25 seconds left in the half.

The Oaks stretched their lead to 25 points by halftime and led by as many as 30 points in the final minute of play. Golden State Baptist was never closer than 18 points following Menlo’s first-half explosion.

Kees paced the Oaks with 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals while Shoffner had 11 points and six rebounds. Logan came away with seven points and seven steals, Cobb had eight points and five steals, and Cochran netted six points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. All 12 Menlo players that saw the floor made a field goal and the Oaks outrebounded the smaller Bears 44-24, including 27-7 on the offensive glass.

Stephen Hernandez scored a game-high 12 points for Golden State Baptist while Ben Davis had nine. The Bears made five-of-six 3-point attempts in the second half.

Menlo (4-8, 2-1) returns to California Pacific Conference play on Saturday versus Pacific Union as part of a doubleheader that begins with the women’s game at 6 p.m. Golden State Baptist (1-16, 0-2) plays at Eugene Bible College on Friday at 7 p.m.
