SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - A late rally took Menlo College to the brink of victory before the Oaks faltered in the final minute of regulation for the second consecutive game and lost an overtime thriller 65-63 to Dominican in California Pacific Conference men's basketball on Thursday night.
Menlo faced its largest deficit of the night when Dominican's Chris Demarco scored to put the Penguins ahead 45-35 with 10 minutes, 38 seconds left in the second half. From there the Oaks backcourt went to work.
Ari Goldman scored six points, Tim Kees had five, and Julian Harris added four during a 15-4 run that put Menlo in front 50-49 with just over four minutes to play. After Dominican knotted the scored at 51 apiece, an Andrew Young field goal and free throws from Harris and Brandon Cochran gave the Oaks a four-point advantage with 42 seconds to play.
Adam Chavis answered with a pair of free throws for the Penguins before Goldman split a pair of his own for the Oaks. Goldman would make one-of-two free throws following an Ari Iventosch field goal to keep Menlo in front by two points with 18 seconds remaining in regulation. Iventosch came up clutch with the game on the line, however, and sunk another shot with six seconds to go to send the game to overtime.
A Goldman 3-pointer gave Menlo a brief lead in the overtime period and Kees scored to pull the Oaks within a point with 51 seconds left, but trailing by two points with 13 seconds to go they couldn't find the basket with a chance to tie or win the game.
Menlo lost in similar fashion last Saturday when it let a four-point lead slip away in the final minute of regulation against visiting Simpson before losing in overtime. The Oaks are now 3-5 in conference and 5-12 overall heading into Saturday's game at William Jessup.
Harris was Menlo's top scorer with 14 points while Kees and Goldman added 13 apiece. Cochran came through with seven points and as many rebounds while being limited to 18 minutes of court time before fouling out. Young and Chris Cobb chipped in eight and six points, respectively.
Demarco finished with 15 points, 12 rebounds to lead Dominican (6-2, 9-9) while Adam Chavis added 15 points and Ray Chavis had 10.
