Men's Basketball - Mon, Feb 2, 2009
HAYWARD, Calif. - Whatever Menlo College is doing against CSU-East Bay it must be working. Unfortunately for the Oaks, upsetting the California Pacific Conference leaders for a second time this season was too much to ask in a 65-53 loss in men's basketball on Saturday night.

The Oaks, who handed East Bay its only Cal Pac loss to date in a 70-63 victory on Dec. 17, trailed by only three points at halftime only to watch the Pioneers pull away late. Menlo is now 3-8 in conference and 5-15 overall after suffering its seventh straight Cal Pac loss. East Bay improves to 10-1 and 13-5 and has a half-game lead over William Jessup atop the conference standings.

East Bay entered the game having outscored Cal Pac opponents by an average of 20 points per game; behind strong play from Brandon Cochran and Tim Kees, the Oaks stuck right with the Pioneers in nearly every facet of the game except for the one that ended up provided the final margin for conference-leading East Bay: long-range shooting. Menlo was limited to 2-of-9 from 3-point range while the Pioneers drained 6-of-12 from deep.

Cochran scored a team-high 15 points and added five rebounds while Kees poured in 13 points. Leading scorer Julian Harris was limited to seven points as freshmen Logan Shoffner and Mike Stone chipped in six and five, respectively.

Tauran Moore led the way for East Bay, scoring 21 points while never leaving the floor. Jun Uchida added 15 in just 20 minutes of action while five other Pioneers scored at least four points. East Bay forced 21 turnovers and outrebounded the Oaks by six - all on the offensive glass.

Menlo has a conference bye on Thursday before returning to action on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. at Pacific Union. The Oaks dropped a 54-51 decision to Pacific Union (2-8, 4-13) on Jan. 10.
