REDDING, Calif. - Menlo College may not have challenged a pair of nationally-ranked foes, but it still provided two of the biggest highlights of the tournament at the California Pacific Conference Golf Championships over the weekend at Tierra Oaks Golf Club, one of Northern California's toughest courses.
Oaks freshman Kamalu Kaina and senior Chris Long were the talk of the tournament as they took turns stealing the limelight. Kaina pulled off the shot of the weekend when he sunk a hole-in-one on the 384-yard, par-4 13th hole. As if the odds of covering all that ground and finding the hole on the same shot weren't bad enough, the shot was taken from a blind tee shot.
"That's the best shot on record at Menlo, I guarantee you," Menlo Head Coach Bill Imwalle said. "It was the best golf shot I've ever seen."
Not to be outdone, Long needed 18 holes to impress the crowd on Sunday. After needing eight shots for a quadruple bogey on the first hole, the senior proceeded to birdie six of the final 17 holes for an 80 on the day.
Long and Kaina ended up tying for the best two-day score on the team at 164 while Long's score on the final day was the best of the weekend for the Oaks. Kaina fired an 83 on Saturday and an 81 on Sunday while Long shot an 84 on the opening day of the event.
Cody Grimes shot a career-best 84 on Saturday followed by a 91, Brandon McCracken went 90 and 87, and Mark Mizoguchi fired a 100 and a 90.
