SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. – Menlo College made up for some midseason rain with a season-ending 8-4 victory at Bethany on Sunday afternoon in California Pacific Conference softball action.
The Oaks split their final home doubleheader with Bethany on Saturday during the team’s Senior Day celebration, but ended up winning what amounted to a three-game weekend series to close out the season with Sunday’s win as the teams made up what was originally scheduled to be the second game of a Mar. 21 doubleheader.
Second baseman Alisha Vegas did most of Menlo’s damage at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI’s. Senior right fielder closed out an impressive season at the plate with a 2-for-4 effort of her own, including a home run and two runs scored. Senior left fielder Susanne Thomsen drove in a pair while Angela Woerz singled and scored twice.
Senior hurler Pam Marchese went the distance for the victory, the 24th of her career. Marchese allowed three earned runs on nine hits while walking one and striking out one. Kristen Ghimenti was the losing pitcher for the Bruins in a complete game performance of her own.
Finney finishes the season with a team-high 44 hits, good for 7th on the school’s single-season record list. She also finished in a tie for 6th in single-season runs (27) and tied for 4th in steals in a season (12).
Sunday’s victory was the final game in a Menlo uniform for Finney, Marchese, Thomsen, Amber Fruiht, Megan Pacchetti and Ku’ulei Padeken. The Oaks finish the season 11-25 overall and 5-15 in the Cal Pac.
