ATHERTON, Calif. – Senior right fielder and junior designated player Courtney Emry were unanimously selected to the First Team All-California Pacific Conference softball team by the conference’s coaches Thursday as eight Menlo College players were honored in total.
In addition to the pair of First Team All-Cal Pac selections, junior second baseman Alisha Vegas, senior shortstop Megan Pacchetti and freshman pitcher Jessica Cobb were named Second Team All-Cal Pac; junior center fielder Angela Woerz, senior left fielder Susanne Thomsen and senior third baseman Ku’ulei Padeken earned Honorable Mention.
Finney had a banner year for the Oaks out of the leadoff spot in the batting order, most notably in conference play. The speedy senior finished with a .457 batting average against Cal Pac competition with 32 hits and 17 runs scored – all team highs. Finney also had a .643 slugging percentage, .531 on-base percentage and nine stolen bases. In just two years at Menlo after transferring from De Anza College, Finney moved into the top 10 in the school record books for batting average, double and stolen bases. With 44 hits in 2009 she moved into a tie for seventh place on the single-season hits list.
Emry, a first-year transfer from Mid-Plains College, provided pop in the middle of the Oaks lineup all season long as the designated player while also starting a number of games at catcher. She batted .281 in conference play and had a team-high 19 RBI’s against all competition while tying for the team lead in home runs (3) with Thomsen. Vegas continued her Menlo career with a .289 batting average as a junior while driving in a team-best 13 runs in Cal Pac play. With four doubles she moved up to second place on the program’s all-time doubles list with 25. In addition to her success at the plate, Vegas finished the season with a .966 fielding percentage on 89 chances. No other Oaks player had a higher fielding percentage with more than 42 chances.
Pacchetti had a bittersweet end to her Menlo career, finishing in the top 10 in the record books in career hits, at bats, doubles, triple, home runs RBI’s, runs, stolen bases and games played despite uncharacteristic struggles at the plate. The senior leader still had 24 hits and 18 RBI’s and played one of the toughest positions on the field with aplomb. Pacchetti also finished her career in the top 10 in six categories for single-season records.
Cobb may have been the biggest surprise of the season for Menlo, finishing her first season as the team leader in wins (6) while posting a 4.28 earned run average. The freshman hurler made 22 appearances, 10 in relief, and struck out 30 in 86 2/3 innings pitched to stabilize the Oaks pitching rotation.
Woerz played a flawless center field, finishing without an error in 42 chances while backing up Finney in the batting order. A junior transfer from College of San Mateo, she finished second on the team with 30 hits, including a team-high seven doubles and 14 runs batted in. Woerz was second on the team in steals with five.
Thomsen finished her career as one of the Oaks best hitters, getting at least 28 hits for the fourth straight season. She ranks in the top 10 in career hits, at bats, doubles, home runs, RBI’s, runs scored and stolen bases. In 2009, Thomsen was second on the team with 18 RBI’s and third in hits (28), slugging percentage (.406), and on-base percentage (.381).
Padeken played her final games with the Oaks as a solid defensive third baseman while closing out her career among the best in program history in doubles, home runs, RBI’s and games played. She had 17 hits and nine RBI’s as a senior.
