Northwest Conference Student-Athlete of the Week Press Release

ATHERTON, Calif. - Menlo College junior linebacker Shawn Winters was named Northwest Conference Football Defensive Player of the Week after a strong performance in the Oaks 14-3 victory at Puget Sound the conference announced Tuesday. Freshman quarterback Cruz Castillo earned honorable mention in the offensive category.

Winters finished the game with five solo tackles, two tackles for loss, two sacks, and a fumble recovery as Menlo's defense shut down the Loggers in Tacoma, Wash. The Oaks limited Puget Sound to 217 yards of total offense and forced five turnovers en route to their first NWC victory of the season.

Through six games, Winters leads Menlo with seven and a half tackles for loss, three sacks, and two fumble recoveries. He is third on the team with 18 solo tackles and has 22 tackles overall.

Castillo completed 22-of-33 passes for 272 yards and two touchdowns in his first college start.

Menlo heads into its bye week at 1-1 in the NWC and 2-4 overall. The Oaks return to action Oct. 24 at Whitworth in Spokane, Wash. at 1 p.m.
