SPOKANE, Wash. - It looks like Menlo College may have found something to hang its hat on. The Oaks defense rose to the occasion again, limiting Whitworth to just a pair of scores while Payton Bell capped off a 78-yard drive with a touchdown late in the fourth quarter as Menlo rallied from a 10-point deficit to stun Whitworth 14-10 in a Northwest Conference battle at the Pine Bowl on Saturday afternoon. With its defense hitting on all cylinders, especially after halftime, Menlo's struggling offense came through with its biggest drive of the season midway through the fourth quarter. Trailing 10-7 with just over nine minutes to play, the Oaks took over at their own 22 yard line.
Freshman quarterback Cruz Castillo, who had completed 6-of-15 passes for 73 yards and three interceptions, keyed the drive. Castillo hit fellow freshman Kenny Cavness for 23 yards to start things then followed a short Bell loss on the ground with a 23-yard strike to James Bassett. After a four-yard toss to Bassett, Castillo found tight end Lance Walkup for 28 yards all the way to the Whitworth one yard line. Bell pounded the ball into the endzone on the following play and Eddie De Leon added the extra point kick for a 14-10 Menlo lead with six minutes, 29 second to play.
The Pirates offense would get two chances to turn the tide from there, but Menlo safety Nolon Doss intercepted a fourth-down pass on Whitworth's ensuing drive before the Pirates last gasp never got further than its own 11 yard line.
Though Whitworth took a 10-point advantage into the locker room at halftime and had a chance to win the game late, the Pirates were up against it from the start against a peaking Oaks defense. Menlo limited Whitworth to a mere 220 yards of total offense, including 48 yards on the ground at 1.4 yards per carry.
Menlo fell behind in the second quarter when Castillo was intercepted by Derek Stottlemyer who returned the ball 50 yards to the Oaks 25. Whitworth needed six plays, including two third-down conversions to punch the ball into the endzone on a three-yard pass from Taylor Eglet to Kyle Scroggins. It was 7-0 with a shade over six minutes remaining in the half.
Whitworth's best drive of the day came on its next possession when it drove 64 yards in 12 plays, but was held to a 36-yard Andy Largent field goal after Andrew Stevens and Damien Girard combined on a huge first-down sack. Still, the Pirates led 10-0 at the half.
Menlo wasted no time in getting back into the game in the third quarter, navigating 73 yards in 12 plays for its first score. Bell ran the ball four times for 17 yards and caught a 12-yard pass from Castillo to set up a 16-yard touchdown strike from the quarterback to wide receiver Erik Rasmussen on second-and-15. Menlo was within 10-7 with seven minutes, 46 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
The Oaks defense forced back-to-back punts to close out the quarter, but had their back against the wall to start the fourth quarter, though it was no fault of their own.
Whitworth took over at the Menlo 27 yard line after its third interception of the game less than a minute into the quarter. Unfortunately for the Pirates, they had no answer for the Oaks swarming defense. Sean Scott ran for four yards then two before Eglet's third-down pass was off its mark. On fourth down Largent missed wide right with Whitworth's last real threat of the game, a 39-yard field goal attempt.
Menlo did have a chance to put the game out of reach following Doss' interception, but was stopped on three running plays from the one yard line after a nine-yard Bell scamper, turning the ball over on downs with one minute, 27 seconds to go. A 99-yard march in short time was a pipe dream against the Oaks defense, however.
Junior linebacker Shawn Winters had his second straight impact game for Menlo, leading the defense with nine tackles, including three for loss, and three sacks. Safety Beau Bussani added eight tackles, cornerback Derek Bosia had seven tackles and two pass break-ups, defensive lineman Chris Tosello had two tackles for loss and as many sacks, and linebacker Brett Klee had one sack and one tackle behind the line of scrimmage. The Oaks totaled seven sacks and eight tackles for loss in the game.
Bell had his best game for Menlo, running the ball 19 times for 76 yards and a touchdown. Castillo finished strong and was 10-for-20 for 151 yards and a score through the air while adding 18 yards on seven carries. Walkup had a team-best three receptions for 51 yards.
The victory was Menlo's second against Whitworth, though it was its first as a member of the Northwest Conference. The Oaks are now 2-1 in the NWC, which is good for third place, and 3-4 overall. Whitworth is 1-3 and 3-5. Menlo hosts Lewis & Clark on Saturday at 12 p.m.
