ATHERTON, Calif. - Amanda Torres scored three times, including twice in just over one minute in the second half as Menlo College coasted to an impressive 4-0 victory over Bethany in California Pacific Conference play on Tuesday afternoon at Wunderlich Field. The Oaks needed less than two minutes to take the lead and outshot Bethany 43-1 in the match, holding possession nearly the entire match while moving above .500 in Cal Pac play. Menlo is now 4-3-1 in conference and 6-9-1 overall, moving into a second place tie on points with William Jessup, which has played three fewer conference matches to date. Bethany is 1-6 in the Cal Pac and 1-10 overall.
Torres got Menlo off on the right foot - literally. The speedy sophomore took a perfect pass from Megan Wells and fired a one-on-one shot past Bruins goalkeeper Breann Anderson for a 1-0 Oaks advantage one minute, 56 seconds into the match.
Maintaining possession nearly start to finish, Menlo had plenty of chances and all but ended things in the 17th minute after just missing on earlier chances to double its lead. Junior Christine Rodriguez supplied an assist that allowed fellow junior Kellie Detweiler to tap the ball into the net for an easy 2-0 lead.
It was still 2-0 in the second half when Torres refused to let the Oaks sit on their comfortable cushion. In the 72nd minute, Torres found herself on the edge of the penalty box and created enough space to zip a shot into the right side netting for Menlo's third goal. In the following minute, she took advantage when Bethany's defense failed to clear a Mallory Todd corner kick and poked the ball across the line during a goal-mouth scramble for possession.
Torres' hat trick gave her the team lead in goals on the season with seven. In the match, Menlo took 21 shots on goal with Anderson coming through with 17 saves for the Bruins. Torres and Rodriguez were Bethany's main tormentors, taking 11 and seven shots, respectively. In comparison, the Bruins took one shot in the whole 90 minutes, which was blocked right after takeoff by freshman defender Amber Jaimes. It proved to be as much action as the Oaks defensive back line would see all day.
Menlo returns to action on Nov. 7 versus William Jessup for its Senior Day beginning at 1 p.m.
