ATHERTON, Calif. - Running back Payton Bell and linebacker Shawn Winters each earned Honorable Mention Northwest Conference Student-Athlete of the Week status for their efforts in Menlo College's 14-10 comeback victory at Whitworth last Saturday.The juniors received mention for the offensive and defensive awards, respectively, as the Oaks moved above .500 in NWC play for the first time ever. Menlo is 2-1 in conference and 3-4 overall, having won three of four games since a 0-3 start to the season under first-year head coach Fred Guidici.
Bell, a transfer from Santa Rosa Junior College, had his best game as an Oak, finishing with 76 yards on 19 carries and scoring the game-winning touchdown from one yard out midway through the fourth quarter. Bell leads Menlo with 263 yards and three touchdowns on the ground this season.
Winters has become a fixture on the NWC Student-Athletes of the Week list, making his third appearance of the season and second in a row. He earned the top honor two weeks ago following Menlo's victory at Puget Sound and earned honorable mention prior to that. Against Whitworth, Winters finished with nine tackles - including eight solo stops - three sacks and three tackles for loss. On the season, he has 31 tackles, 10 ½ tackles for loss, and six sacks.
Menlo returns home this weekend to face Lewis & Clark on Saturday at 12 p.m. at Connor Field. With a victory the Oaks will clinch their first .500 or better record in Northwest Conference play.
