Menlo didn't control possession or put nearly as many shots on target as the accomplished Warriors, but gritted its way into halftime with the game scoreless. Early in the second half the Oaks struck first and looked to foil William Jessup's aim at an unbeaten Cal Pac season.
Midfielder Lacey Musante rolled a perfect pass through the Warriors defense that sprung Amanda Torres free down the left side. Torres sped past her defender to gain possession of the ball, turned the corner near the left edge of the penalty area and put just enough on a pass that Kellie Detweiler was able to deflect past onrushing goalkeeper Lindsey Cesena and into the net. Menlo led 1-0 in the 58th minute.
Though hard-fought, the Oaks lead also proved to be short-lived. William Jessup's Sandy Hanania played a two-on-one ball to an open Jacque Cassell for an easy equalizer just less than five minutes later in the 63rd minute before Angela Lira netted the first of two goals in the 67th minute for the lead. Lira was finally able to put the game out of reach in the 89th minute off a Gabby Leon assist.
Menlo's defense did everything it could to keep things close. Paige Cruz made seven saves from her goalkeeper spot while Maryn Craig and Amber Jaimes each cleared would-be goals off the line at the last moment to keep the match scoreless before Detweiler's opener.
The Oaks are 4-4-1 in the Cal Pac and 6-10-1 overall heading into their season finale versus Simpson on Tuesday at 1 p.m. William Jessup is 8-0-1 in conference - with Menlo earning the draw last month - and 10-3-2 overall.
