FOREST GROVE, Ore. - Reigning national champion Katherine Fulp-Allen and newcomer Sherylyn Sabado each put their best foot forward to win their respective weight classes in the Mike Clock Open at Pacific University on Sunday.
Fulp-Allen dominated on short rest at 51 kg, defeating 2009 Junior World Champion Victoria Anthony of Simon Fraser just two days after finishing third at the Hargobind International Tournament in Surrey, British Columbia. In Friday's international event, Fulp-Allen lost a heartbreaker to Team Canada's Gen Haley, 1-0, 4-4, 2-1, in a semifinal match before defeating Diana Ford and Gabrielle Henry impressively to take the consolation bracket.
"Katherine had her best performance of the young season," Menlo College Head Coach Lee Allen said. "(Katherine's loss to Haley) is the best match that she has had with Canada's number one wrestler at 51 kg."
At the Mike Clock Open, Sabado was unstoppable at 48 kg, pinning Yakima Valley's Tamima Jones in the semifinals prior to dispatching Miochiko Ariki of Simon Fraser in the final.
"Sherry's outstanding performance is a direct result of her work ethic and her ability to focus on learning the essentials to gain her desired result," said Allen. "She truly believes in what we are doing."
Also placing for the Oaks were Brittany Caoile (2nd, 82 kg), Tehani Ibarra (3rd, 63 kg), Rachael Skroch (4th, 59 kg), Kayla Garza (4th, 63 kg), and Keaton Long (4th, 67 kg). Brittany Lucero did not place, but showed marked improvement at 48 kg.
No team scores were tallied at the event, though Simon Fraser impressed by taking five of the eight weight classes. The Clan is likely the top team in the country, having recently beaten defending national champion Oklahoma City at a dual meet.
Menlo returns to action Nov. 20-21 when it travels to the Can-Am Duals and Tournament held in Jamestown, N.D.
