ATHERTON, Calif. - Menlo College will travel for the NAIA Championship Opening Round for the second consecutive season it was announced Monday when the official pairings were released. The Oaks play at No. 15 Point Loma Nazarene in San Diego, Calif. for a 2 p.m. start on Saturday.
Menlo enters the NAIA Championship riding an 11-match winning streak that culminated with last Saturday's California Pacific Conference Tournament Championship victory over Holy Names in four sets. The Oaks are 17-9 on the season and finished a perfect 12-0 in the Cal Pac, running their conference unbeaten streak to 27 matches, including the victory over Holy Names.
Point Loma Nazarene holds an 18-10 overall record and finished 8-10 in the Golden State Athletic Conference, easily the NAIA's toughest volleyball conference. Though the Sea Lions ended GSAC play in seventh place, the top six teams in the conference's final standings each received one of 11 byes through the opening round straight to the NAIA Championship in Sioux City, Iowa. Point Loma's conference counterparts in the tournament include No. 1 Fresno Pacific, No. 2 California Baptist, No. 4 Concordia, No. 5 Azusa Pacific, No. 10. Biola, and No. 11 Vanguard.
The Oaks will rely heavily on its senior class, which produced five All-Cal Pac honorees this season. Two-time Cal Pac Player of the Year Deborah Bekowies and two-time First Team All-Cal Pac selection Sarah Poole are Menlo's big bodies at the net; fellow two-time First Team All-Cal Pac selection Stephanie Williamson is essential at setter; Honorable Mention All-Cal Pac honorees Kelsey Bailey and Katie Pendley exhibit much versatility at outside hitter; and the lone Menlo junior to receive a conference honor, Second Team All-Cal Pac member Mia Ortiz, covers the court at libero.
Menlo and Point Loma have played three like opponents this season in Fresno Pacific, Biola, and Holy Names. The Oaks lost in three sets to Fresno Pacific and Biola, but won three matches against Holy Names in just 11 sets. Point Loma Nazarene beat Holy Names in three sets, but lost twice each to Fresno Pacific and Biola. The Sea Lions have gone 7-11 against schools currently ranked in the Tachikara-NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll.
The winners of Saturday's opening round matches advance to the NAIA National Championship where they will join the 11 schools that received opening round bye and the host school for the final 24-team tournament, which begins with pool play. Point Loma Nazarene will offer live game video, as well as live stats for Saturday's match with Menlo.
