ATHERTON, Calif. - A season during which Menlo College showed marked improvement over its most recent incarnations was rewarded when the All-Northwest Conference football team was announced on Monday evening. Four Oaks were awarded First Team honors, three were selected Second Team, and eight earned Honorable Mention All-NWC.

Senior tight end Lance Walkup, junior defensive lineman Damien Girard, junior linebacker Shawn Winters, and defensive back Beau Bussani were named First Team All-NWC while freshman defensive lineman Greig O'Connor, sophomore defensive lineman Devon Jonsson, and sophomore defensive back Derek Bosia earned Second Team All-NWC status.

Menlo's 3-3 finish in the NWC was its best in four seasons in the conference while its 4-6 overall record was the best the Oaks had put up since 2006. Under first-year head coach Fred Guidici, Menlo took the first step toward the top tier of the conference, finishing in a tie for third place. Three of the Oaks losses came against nationally-ranked opponents with another coming at the hands of NCAA Div. II Humboldt State.

Of Menlo's seven first or second team selections, only Walkup is a senior. The tight end came on late in the season to finish third on the team in receptions (21) and yards (235) for an 11.2 average. Walkup caught one touchdown pass on the season and set up the game-winning touchdown in a comeback at Whitworth with a 29-yard reception down to the one yard line in the fourth quarter.

The Oaks stellar defense supplied the other six honorees, all of which return next season. Girard finished fourth on the team with 43 tackles despite playing in the middle of the line, adding two tackles for loss and a forced fumble; Winters led the Oaks in tackles for loss (12.5), sacks (8.0), and forced fumbles, and was selected NWC Student-Athlete of the Week for his performance against Puget Sound when he totaled five tackles, two sacks, two tackles for loss, and a forced fumble; Bussani was Menlo's leading tackler from his safety position with 71 to go with a team-high three interceptions and two blocked kicks; O'Connor was a pleasant surprise in his first season, making 32 tackles with four for loss and a sack; Jonsson was third on the team with 49 tackles and second in tackles for loss with 8.5; and Bosia, a cornerback, had a team-best eight pass break-ups to go with 27 tackles.

In addition to the seven Oaks selected All-NWC, eight others earned honorable mention: senior wide receiver James Bassett, junior running back Payton Bell, freshman quarterback Cruz Castillo, freshman wide receiver Kenny Cavness, senior linebacker Brett Klee, senior running back Shaun Souza, junior running back Andrew Stevens, and senior linebacker Justin Weise. Of the 15 honorees, 10 return next season as Menlo looks to post its first winning record since 2003.
