ATHERTON, Calif. - After learning a tough lesson in a loss on Saturday, Menlo College put the lesson to practice in storming out of the halftime break, but couldn't hold on in a 71-61 loss to NCAA Div. II CSU Stanislaus in the Lamont Ramsey Classic finale on Sunday afternoon.
The Oaks struggles to start the second half in a disappointing loss to Johnson & Wales on the first day of the classic seemed a distant memory 24 hours later. Menlo used a second half-opening 18-3 run to turn an eight point deficit into a 46-39 lead in nearly the same amount of time as Saturday's game slipped away coming out of the break.
Senior guard Tim Kees opened the stretch with a 3-pointer off a Nick McCullar assist before guard Drew Davis sunk a pull-up 3-pointer on the Oaks following possession. When junior Dejon Grant knifed into the lane and floated the ball through the hoop the score was tied at 36 with just more than three minutes gone in the half.
Forward Andrew Young scored inside thanks to a Grant assist for Menlo's first lead since midway through the opening half just less than a minute later. After CSU Stanislaus' Jordan Stokes split a pair of free throws, Ryan Dung drained a 3-pointer that forced the Warriors to take a timeout nearly five minutes into the half. Tyler Rajnus made two free throws for the Oaks that Stanislaus' Casey Cutts answered with a basket before Kees ended the run with a 3-pointer from a Grant pass. Menlo led 46-39.
The Oaks still led by seven at 50-43 when they hit a wall that was wearing Warriors red and white. Facing its largest deficit, Stanislaus went on a run of its own to take a six-point lead. Chad Johnson sunk a 3-pointer that he followed with a three-point play to quickly turn the tide. Dwight Jones made two free throws and a layup off a steal before Tyler Smith canned a 3-pointer off a Johnson assist for a 56-50 Warriors cushion with less than six minutes to play.
Menlo briefly got within four points when McCullar found Young for a score, but the Oaks used their firepower to open the half and Stanislaus led by at least eight over the final three minutes.
The Oaks looked to be in over their head early in the contest as Stanislaus jumped out to a 10-2 advantage, but Rajnus, Kees, and Grant scored successive baskets to get Menlo into the game. Julian Harris gave the Oaks their first lead at 16-14 with eight and a half minutes left in the half, but the Warriors answered with a 14-2 spurt and took a 36-28 lead into the break.
Kees led Menlo with 14 points while Harris added 10. Davis and Rajnus scored eight apiece, Dung netted seven, and Young and Grant each tallied six. The Oaks managed just 22 rebounds to Stanislaus' 34 with freshman Patrick Greene grabbing a team-high four.
Stanislaus was led by Jones' 14 while Matt Ibewiro had 13 and seven rebounds. Johnson scored 12 points to go with five steals while Jordan Stokes netted nine points and had six blocks.
Menlo falls to 2-3 on the season heading into next week's Lee Fulmer Memorial Tournament at University of Redlands. CSU Stanislaus improves to 4-0.
