JAMESTOWN, N.D. - Menlo College had a successful weekend of competition at the Can-Am Duals and Championships on Nov. 20-21 at Jamestown College in what was billed as the largest women's wrestling tournament in North America.
Festivities opened on Friday with the Can-Am Duals in which the Oaks defeated Lindenwood 26-20, King College 32-13, and lost to Missouri Valley 31-13. Senior star Katherine Fulp-Allen at 51 kg, freshman Keaton Long at 72 kg, and freshman Brittany Ladion-Lucero at 44 kg each won all three of their matches on the day. Fulp-Allen won a pair of easy decisions before taking out Missouri Valley's Shorna Colbert via pin. Long won her first two matches by pin and responded from an early deficit to dispatch Veno Barron of Missouri Valley 0-4, 7-0, 5-0. Sabado won twice by pin and again by forfeit.
Jacquelyn Davis (55 kg), Kayla Garza (67 kg), and Brittany Caoile (95 kg) each won two matches during the duals while Rebecca Medeiros (82 kg) won once.
On Saturday, three Oaks placed in their respective weight classes as Menlo finished fifth out of 13 teams in the team standings. Oklahoma City took first place with 66 points followed by Missouri Valley (40), Jamestown (38), Regina (28), Menlo (24), Lindenwood (22), King (19), and Saskatchewan (13).
Fulp-Allen took second at 51 kg while Keaton Long was third at 67 kg and Kayla Garza was fifth at 63 kg.
"Keaton has begun to show her potential," Menlo Head Coach Lee Allen said. "By placing third she proved she can compete with the very best. Kayla also had a breakthrough performance."
Menlo has a long layoff before returning to action on Jan. 1 when its hosts the Lady Oaks Invite at Haynes-Prim Pavilion. The following day the Oaks take on Yakima Valley Community College, Simon Fraser, and Oklahoma City in the Lady Oaks Duals.
