REDLANDS, Calif. - It took some time for Menlo College to find its footing following a gut-wrenching loss, but once it did it was game over. The Oaks scored 50 second-half points en route to an 83-61 comeback victory over West Coast Baptist at the 62nd Annual Lee Fulmer Memorial Tournament at University of Redlands on Friday evening to advance to the consolation championship game.
Menlo trailed by two points at halftime and was down 40-36 in the opening minutes of the second half before it took control. Julian Harris sank a 3-pointer to give the Oaks their first lead of the half at 41-40. After the teams traded the next three baskets, freshman forward Patrick Greene scored two of his team-high 14 points on an inside move to put Menlo ahead for good at 45-44 with 14 minutes, 35 seconds still to play.
Dejon Grant followed with a jumper before Greene found room for another inside score and a five point cushion. A Ryan Dung jumper just nine seconds later forced the reeling Eagles to take a timeout as they faced their largest deficit of the game.
West Coast Baptist hung around into the final 10 minutes, but it was only a matter of time before Menlo put the game out of reach. Cody Mainous drained a 3-pointer with just less than nine minutes left to pull the Eagles within 60-54 only for a pair of free throws from Nick McCullar to start a 13-2 run that stretched the Oaks lead to 73-56 with three minutes remaining.
Following McCullar's pair from the charity stripe at the eight-minute mark, Harris made a layup off an assist from the big man. Akeem Smith answered with a layup for the Eagles, then Harris and McCullar switched roles with the former finding the junior forward for an open jumper. Point guard Drew Davis converted a layup and a 3-pointer before Tyler Rajnus scored inside from another Harris assist to cap the spurt.
Menlo never led by fewer than 14 points from there and scored the final eight points of the game.
The Oaks 46-24 scoring margin in the paint proved to be the difference in the game. Menlo outrebounded the Eagles 46-25 as Greene finished with 14 points and nine rebounds. Rajnus scored 12 points and grabbed four boards, McCullar had eight and eight, and Andrew Young grabbed eight rebounds. Harris scored 14 points while Tim Kees totaled 12 points and seven rebounds from his guard spot.
Tyler Bro led West Coast Baptist with 17 points while Mainous added 16. T.J. Tibbs grabbed nine rebounds for the Eagles.
Menlo is now 3-4 on the season and will take on UC Santa Cruz in the consolation championship at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Banana Slugs (2-5) defeated Willamette 93-90 in Friday's first game. Two weeks ago the Oaks knocked off Willamette 95-72 on the road. West Coast Baptist is 2-6 overall.
