SEASIDE, Calif. - Going on the road following a 13-day layoff to take on an NCAA Div. II opponent proved to be too much for Menlo College to overcome as it fell 80-54 to Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday night in a non-conference contest at The Kelp Bed.
The loss snapped a two-game winning streak by the Oaks, who fell to 4-5 overall. Cal State Monterey Bay is 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Menlo was in trouble from the outset, falling into an early 15-2 hole with only a pair of Andrew Young free throws to show for their first six-plus minutes of effort. The Oaks trailed by at least 11 points the rest of the way with the Otters Nick Scheible draining a 3-pointer with six seconds left in the first half to put his team in front 48-27 at the break.
Despite tightening up its defense to begin the second half, Menlo's struggles from the field prevented it from making a run even as it limited Cal State Monterey Bay to only six points in the opening five minutes of the period. The Otters led by as many as 31 points on four different occasions in the middle of the second half.
Freshman forward Patrick Greene finished 4-of-7 from the field to lead Menlo with 11 points while also grabbing five rebounds in 15 minutes of action. The Oaks shot just 29 percent from the field, including 1-of-16 from 3-point range. Young added nine points on 7-of-10 shooting from the free throw line, with Drew Davis and Tyler Rajnus each chipping in seven points. Julian Harris - Menlo's leading scorer - was held to a season-low two points.
Keith Wilson scored a game-high 17 points to lead Cal State Monterey Bay while Shaun Williams netted 14 and Jamelle Tolliver 10.
Menlo will have a chance to wipe Friday's loss from its memory quickly, returning home to take on Westmont (5-2) at 4 p.m. on Monday.
