SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Menlo College did all it could to get away from its recent struggles - leave home, as well as conference play - but still fell victim to UC Santa Cruz 75-56 on Saturday night.
The Oaks have been reeling since early December and have now lost eight straight dating back to a 79-75 overtime victory over UC Santa Cruz in Redlands, Calif. on Dec. 5. Menlo entered Saturday's rematch with the Banana Slugs having lost their last five contests in what can only be deemed excruciating fashion, but this time there was little drama as UC Santa Cruz made 6-of-9 3-point attempts in the first half and finished with a 22-3 run to take a 40-25 halftime lead on its way to a comfortable victory.
UC Santa Cruz finished the game shooting 52.6 percent from the field and 47.1 percent from long range. Even the Banana Slugs 53.8 percent shooting on free throws outpaced Menlo's 9-for-20 effort from the charity stripe.
Junior guard Julian Harris scored 15 points to lead Menlo before fouling out. Nick McCullar scored 10 points with nine rebounds while Tyler Rajnus had nine points, six rebounds. Dejon Grant chipped in eight points and two steals.
Ryan Matsuoka led the Banana Slugs way, scoring 19 points with six assists and three steals. Matsuoka did not turn the ball over and the rest of the UC Santa Cruz roster followed his lead, giving the ball away only seven times.
Darrin Lew hit for 15 points, Tyler Hunt grabbed 10 rebounds, and Ted Monson added nine points. 11 different players scored for the Banana Slugs.
Menlo drops to 4-12 with the loss and will return to California Pacific Conference play on Thursday at 8 p.m. versus Pacific Union. UC Santa Cruz is 6-11.
