ROCKLIN, Calif. - In a game that turned into a glorified free throw contest Menlo College kept it close only to fall 77-70 at William Jessup in California Pacific Conference action on Saturday night.

Three Oaks fouled out - compared to one William Jessup player - as Menlo was called for 28 fouls. While the frequent whistles thinned the Oaks ranks as the game wore on, it also enabled them to stay in the game throughout. Menlo sank 27-of-32 free throw attempts - an 84.4 percent clip - which was only just outdone by the Warriors 29 free throw conversions in 37 attempts.

Tim Kees scored to start the game, giving the Oaks their only lead of the night. After a tight opening 10 minutes, William Jessup used a 13-1 run to build a 33-21 lead with just more than four minutes until halftime. Menlo responded with eight consecutive points initiated by Tyler Rajnus inside score. Julian Harris made a pair of free throws and sank a jumper during the stretch while Kees made two free throws. Freshman Patrick Greene converted two from the charity stripe 16 seconds before the break to trim the Oaks deficit to 34-31.

Menlo point guard Drew Davis began the second half with a driving score that the Warriors Eleazar Jones answered with his own basket. Harris then drained a 3-pointer to tie the score at 36 with 18 minutes, 26 seconds remaining. William Jessup scored the next five points and led by at least two points the rest of the way.

After the Warriors pushed their lead to 10 points again, Menlo clawed back within striking distance as Kees made it a 64-61 game with three minutes, 21 seconds to play thanks to a pair of free throws. William Jessup converted four straight freebies of its own and its lead bounced between eight and five points as the Oaks ran out of answers.

Kees scored 20 points to lead Menlo, sinking 14-of-15 free throws before fouling out. Harris scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and Dejon Grant netted 10 points. The Oaks two tallest players - Andrew Young and Tyler Rajnus - also fouled out after combining to play 39 minutes.

Damal Neil led William Jessup with 26 points and 11 rebounds, making 14-of-17 free throws. Kadeem Kirsten had 13 points and six rebounds, and Jason Washington chipped in 10 points. Tevin Hurd totaled nine points and five rebounds before fouling out.

Menlo is 5-13 overall and 1-4 in the Cal Pac. It will take on Simpson (4-15, 0-4) at 7 p.m. on Thursday at home. William Jessup is 4-1 and tied for second place in conference play, and 9-11 overall.
