ATHERTON, Calif. - Menlo College needed to shoot well, hold onto the ball, and keep its best players on the court if it wanted to have a chance to beat Holy Names on Thursday night. The Oaks struggled to do any of the three well enough to knock off the impressive visitors in a 69-61 California Pacific Conference loss inside Haynes-Prim Pavilion.
The Oaks entered the game with a chance to make a run at one of the top spots in the Cal Pac standings and a conference tournament bye, but were outclassed most of the way. Menlo is now 3-4 in the Cal Pac and 8-12 overall. Holy Names improves to 6-1 in conference and 15-10 overall.
Menlo never led and was only even with the Hawks for the opening 50 seconds of the game before Katie Stiles opened the scoring. Holy Names eventually opened a 29-17 margin on a Jamie-Leigh Ronolo 3-pointer with five minutes, 40 seconds left in the first half and led by at least 10 points until Senoj Jones made a pair of free throws for the game's final points with 22 seconds left.
The Oaks faced their largest deficit of the night at 63-42 with only seven minutes, 50 seconds remaining, but managed to whittle it to within striking distance.
Stephanie Truong started a Menlo run with a pair of free throws. After the Oaks forced a turnover, Truong canned a 3-pointer from the corner. Kelli Brull pulled down a defensive rebound on Holy Names' ensuing possession and pushed the ball up court when Truong made a catch-and-shoot 3-pointer from the wing. Just like that the Oaks pulled within 63-50 with six minutes, 15 seconds left.
Katelyn Guild scored inside from a Carlie Stone assist with just more than five minutes left to cut the Hawks lead to 11, but Menlo's offense stalled from there. Holy Names added two free throws for a 13 point lead and the Oaks didn't score again until Brittany Taylor sunk a pair from the charity stripe with three minutes, 22 seconds remaining. Holy Names held onto the ball and the lead.
Holy Names was forced into 22 turnovers and shot just 36.4 percent from the field, but both numbers were better than what Menlo could produce. The Oaks turned the ball over 27 times, shot 32.1 percent from the field, and had two players foul out. Both teams managed to shoot better from the outside than in with the Hawks making 7-of-14 from deep and Menlo 6-of-14.
Guild led Menlo with 14 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double while Jones scored 15. Truong added 11 with Brull chipping in five points and eight rebounds.
Ronolo scored a game-high 20 points for Holy Names, sinking 3-of-4 3-pointers. Sarah Henning matched Guild's double-double, scoring 12 points with 11 rebounds, while Marie Vodiscka scored seven points.
During Saturday's basketball doubleheader, the Menlo Athletic Department raised $537 for Coaches vs. Cancer. This weekend is the annual fundraising event for the entity, which is a partnership between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches, and helps fund cancer research and awareness.
