COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - One week after winning her second consecutive WCWA National Championship, Menlo College Senior Katherine Fulp-Allen found things a little more difficult at the Dave Schultz Memorial International on Saturday.
Wrestling at 51 kg, Fulp-Allen opened with a victory, but lost two of her final three matches and was knocked out of contention for placing at the event by Missouri Baptist's Amy Whitbeck, the same wrestler she defeated for the national title seven days earlier.
"Katherine found it difficult to keep an emotional high and to keep her physical edge for two weeks in a row," Oaks Head Coach Lee Allen said.
In her first match of the competition, Fulp-Allen cruised to a 4-0, 6-0 decision over Puerto Rico's Enid Rivera Valazque. Things got much more difficult in her second match when eventual third-place finisher Jessica MacDonald of Canada won by technical fall, 6-0, 7-0. Fulp-Allen responded with a 3-1, 1-0 victory against Spain's Martia Del Serrano Bacelo before Whitbeck handed her a slim 4-0, 0-1, 5-4 defeat.
Fulp-Allen currently ranks third in the U.S. Senior Women's Rankings and is a member of the U.S. National Team. She will compete at the University Nationals on April 8 in Akron, Ohio.
A total of 22 countries were represented at the tournament. China's Hui Li placed first at 51 kg, defeating Germany's Alexandra Engelhardt by fall.
