ATHERTON, Calif. - Menlo College won the final four matches of the night, taking as many as No. 19 San Francisco State only to come up short in a 22-15 loss on Senior Night inside Haynes-Prim Pavilion on Thursday.
The Oaks fell into a 22-3 hole against their nationally-ranked NCAA Div. II foe, which included a forfeit. Menlo bounced back to take five of six matches to close out the dual, winning three in dramatic fashion.
Jason Moorhouse got Menlo on the scoreboard in the fifth match of the night at 125 pounds. Moorhouse rode his way to victory in the final period, losing the lead late in the match to Pierre Bondoc only to win it on the ground when time ran out thanks to two minutes, 15 seconds of riding time for the decisive point in a 6-5 win.
Two matches later the Oaks began their dual-closing surge.
At 141 pounds, Christian Martinez proved to be his usual evasive self, earning his first point of the match with an escape and maintaining the dominant position late for a 2-0 victory after earning a point at the end for almost two minutes of riding time against Ben Lockett.
Senior Cody Gibson took down Aaron Wilson early in the third period to extend his lead to an unreachable five-point margin en route to a 9-4 victory at 149 pounds before fellow senior Josh Emmett kept the good times going for the Oaks.
Emmett led a tense match 1-0 with just 12 seconds remaining when he was penalized to even the score. Fortunately the senior had accrued one minute, 56 seconds of riding time in his favor and muscled his way to a 2-1 win over Isaiah Jimenez at 157 pounds.
In the final match of the night the Oaks Adrian Gonzales found an even more dramatic way to earn three points for Menlo. Wrestling at 165 pounds, Gonzales turned what was sure to be a two-point loss around with a takedown in the dying seconds of the third period. The Gators' Ian Wrenn forced sudden victory with a point for riding time, but Gonzales wasted no time in ending the match, as well as the dual, with a takedown for a 7-5 win.
Seniors Mike Cavanaugh and Sean Weeks found themselves on the wrong end of decisions at 174 and 184 pounds, respectively, but acquitted themselves well against highly-ranked San Francisco State.
Menlo is 3-13 in duals, though that portion of its schedule is complete. The Oaks compete in the NAIA West National Qualifier next Saturday in Havre, Mont. on the Montana State-Northern campus. It will be the final chance for grapplers to qualify for the NAIA National Championships in March at Oklahoma City University.
