ATHERTON, Calif. - As home openers go, there was little more Menlo College could have done to send its fans away with a smile on Friday afternoon. Leadoff hitter Paul Oakley smashed a line drive to center field, plating Joel Hull with the winning run three pitches after he tied the score with a two-out double off the wall for a 4-3 Oaks victory over Westmont at Cartan Field.
Menlo trailed 3-2 entering its final at bat, but got exactly what it needed to start a rally when second baseman Christopher Dailey drew a five-pitch walk from Westmont reliever Dan Price. Ty Finley followed by popping up a sacrifice bunt attempt that Price caught with a dive and pinch hitter Aaron Lopez struck out swinging for a quick second out.
With the Oaks sitting on five hits for the game, none since the fifth inning, and Hull hitting in the nine spot things didn't appear ready to get any better for Menlo with one swing of the bat. Hull threw conventions out the window, though, when he turned on the second pitch he saw, clubbing it high and deep to left-center field. Warriors left fielder Coby Cress leapt at the fence as the ball sailed over his glove and off the wall. Dailey scored easily from first base to tie the score at 3 as Hull sailed easily into second.
Oakley nearly came out of his shoes as he fouled back the first pitch he saw from Price and then smoked a one-one pitch to deep center field, forcing Terrell Wong into a desperation dive for the ball with his back to home plate. Hull scored the winning run as he and Oakley were mobbed by their teammates.
What was a pitchers' duel for most the day saw both teams pick up some steam at the plate in the final innings. It was 2-2 when starting southpaws Brian Priestley of Menlo and Jacob Regalado of Westmont each left the game after the seventh inning, and the Warriors were the first to take advantage.
Coby Cress started the top of the eighth inning with a walk and moved to second on a Jordan Bottenfield sacrifice bunt. Cress remained at second base when pinch hitter Taylor Maples grounded out to third baseman Michael Brandi. Oaks reliever Darren Takasaki was set to get out of the jam when he started Colten Christianson with two strikes, but the left-handed swinger lobbed the next pitch he saw into right field for a base hit that pushed Cress across for a 3-2 Westmont lead.
Menlo couldn't get anything done in the home half of the eighth inning and Oakley set the stage for the Oaks rally in the top of the ninth when he made a diving catch on what looked sure to be an extra base hit by Evan Wadginski that would have driven in a run to double the Warriors lead.
Menlo senior first baseman Shane Parsons started things with a bang in the first inning, driving a solo home run into the trees above the fence in left-center field to put the Oaks ahead. Westmont tied the score in the third inning when Cress singled with two out, stole second, and scored on a Bottenfield single to center.
The Warriors took their first lead when Ezequiel Torres doubled to left-center, raced to third when Finley threw behind him at second and shortstop Chris Mazza's toss to third was late, and scored on a Terrell Wong sacrifice fly to right field.
Menlo answered in its next at bat. Sam Dodge drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a Hull sacrifice bunt. Dodge barely avoided the tag at third base when advancing on a pitch in the dirt and scored the tying run on a Paul Oakley infield single.
Priestley and Regalado finished off their time on the mound with little trouble. Priestley retired six of the next seven batters he faced without a threat and Regalado faced the minimum number of batters over the next two innings. Priestley allowed two earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and a walk. Regalado allowed the same number of runs on four hits, striking out six with four walks.
Oakley was the only Oaks with more than one base hit, finishing 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Parsons drew a pair of walks after hitting his home run.
Christianson and Cress were each 2-for-4 for Westmont. Christianson added a double and an RBI while Cress scored twice.
Menlo is 1-1 on the season and hosts Westmont (3-4) again on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
