ATHERTON, Calif. - Menlo College took its time warming up at the plate, but did so in time to split a doubleheader with Westmont on Saturday afternoon that allowed the Oaks to win the three-game series. The Oaks used a big inning to win the nightcap, 6-3, after nearly pulling off a second straight ninth-inning rally in a 5-4 loss that started the day.

In the series rubber match, Menlo trailed 2-0 entering the last half of the fifth inning when it put up its biggest number of the weekend, scoring five times to turn the tide.

Sam Dodge and Joel Hull started by reaching on an infield error and a bunt single, respectively. Leadoff batter Paul Oakley flew out to center, advancing Dodge to third base and setting the stage for the middle of the Oaks order.

Shortstop Chris Mazza rolled a ground ball to short that he beat out for an infield single, pushing Dodge across the plate with Menlo's first run. Senior Shane Parsons picked the right time to heat up, lining a double to the wall in right-center field to score Hull and Mazza for a 3-2 lead, the first of the day for Menlo.

With two outs, Michael Brandi drove a double to the left-center gap to drive in Parsons before Christopher Dailey dropped a single into right field to score Brandi.

Menlo added another run in the seventh inning. Parsons doubled, but was caught between second and third for an out when pinch hitter Taylor Cohn grounded a ball to pitcher David Stott. Cohn advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on another Dailey single to right. The Oaks led 6-2 through seven innings.

With its offense heating up, Menlo's pitching staff had all the run support it would need. Starter - and winning pitcher - Adam Koontz allowed two runs in six innings of work before handing the ball to Sean Sweeney, who pitched a scoreless seventh. Brendan Moe allowed one run in the eighth when he walked Terrell Wong and threw away a pick-off attempt that allowed the speedy centerfielder to score from second on an Evan Wadginski blooper down the left field line. Mazza come on in the ninth and picked up a simple save.

The first game of the day saw the Oaks find their stroke at the plate too late. Menlo trailed 5-1 entering the bottom of the ninth inning with only one hit to its credit - a first-inning Mazza double that the sophomore was thrown out on while trying to stretch it into a triple. After 24 consecutive outs had been recorded by Warriors pitchers without surrendering a base hit, the Oaks nearly pulled off a shocker.

Brandi struck out to start the ninth, but Dailey ignited a rally with a single down the left field line. Ty Finley doubled into the left field corner and the Oaks suddenly had two runners in scoring position. After Brad Binder walked to load the bases, Hull found the hole on the right side of the infield with a bouncing single that plated Dailey and kept the bases juiced.

With the tying run at first in the form of the speedy Hull, Oakley hit into a fielder's choice that retired Binder. Finley scored on the play to make it a 5-3 game with Hull moving to second. A Mazza line drive single to left scored Hull to pull Menlo within a run as Oakley cruised into third base representing the tying run. Parsons was hit by a pitch with a full count to load the bases, but Wilkerson grounded the first pitch he saw to Wadginski at short for an easy force out at second that ended the rally and the game.

Brian Phillips was saddled with the loss for Menlo after allowing five runs - four of them earned - in 4 1/3 innings. Freshman Derek Martinez subbed in ably for the starter, going the rest of the way without allowing a run while scattering three hits.

In the nightcap, Parsons and Dailey each collected two hits and as many RBI's. Mazza and Brandi each had two hits with one RBI. Koontz struck out two and spread nine hits across his six innings of work in picking up the win.

Menlo is now 2-2 on the season and returns to action for another home series beginning next Friday at 2:30 p.m. against Lewis & Clark. The teams will follow with a doubleheader the next day and a single game on Sunday. Westmont is 4-5 overall.
