It took the teams nearly eight minutes to combine for 10 points at the start, but Menlo erased a small deficit and took the lead for the remainder of the game on back-to-back baskets by senior forward Katelyn Guild. The Oaks led 8-6 at that point and maintained their advantage for the final 30 minutes, 17 seconds. For the final 22 minutes, 22 seconds Menlo led by double figures.
Guild finished with a double-double to lead the Oaks seniors, scoring 14 points with 11 rebounds. Fellow senior Senoj Jones netted 11 points with six rebounds and three assists. Kelli Brull, Carlie Stone, and Liane Kobori also played key roles in their final regular season home game.
It was 17-13 Menlo with signs pointing toward a tight game when the Oaks surged to end the half. With defensive intensity a given for Menlo, all it took for it to pull away was some timely scoring that showed up just before halftime.
Jones sank a 3-pointer from a Gianna Covarelli assist to get things going for the Oaks with just more than five minutes remaining. William Jessup got off four shots on its next possession, missing each of them before Stephanie Truong needed just one look at the hoop to score on the other end for a nine-point Menlo lead.
Kobori made a pair of free throws 28 seconds later to give the Oaks their first double figure cushion. A driving score by the Warriors Aleta Stamps did little to slow Menlo down and when Jones made two free throws on the Oaks ensuing possession it was a double digit game for good at 26-15. Guild would score once more just before halftime and another Stamps basket could only pull William Jessup within 29-18 at the break.
There was plenty of time for a potential comeback by the Warriors with the score 32-22 three minutes into the second half, but Menlo put together a quick spurt to stretch out to its largest lead of the night.
Brull split two free throws before Jones made a jumper and later found Truong open for a 3-pointer as the Oaks moved in front 38-22. Jones and Brull converted back-to-back baskets in response to Warriors scores, keeping Menlo ahead by a dozen points midway through the half. The Oaks never let things get even remotely interesting for the casual observer hoping for a contest down the stretch.
Truong led Menlo with 15 points while Brull added five points and seven rebounds. Kobori chipped in three points and two rebounds, Stone scored two points with three steals, and Covarelli grabbed six boards off the bench.
William Jessup had a devil of a time with its outside shot, making just 3-of-18 attempts from beyond the arc. Stamps scored 15 for the Warriors while Maria Viola netted eight points and snagged six rebounds. No other William Jessup player scored more than five points.
With the victory Menlo clinched a home game in the opening round of the Cal Pac Tournament next Wednesday night against an opponent to be determined on the final night of the conference's regular season schedule Saturday. The Oaks, 7-4 in the Cal Pac and 12-12 overall, travel to take on Simpson at 5:30 p.m. William Jessup is now 6-5 in the Cal Pac and 10-17 overall.
