ATHERTON, Calif. - Menlo College played well, but couldn't string together the hits it needed as it was swept in its home-opening doubleheader by Academy of Art on Saturday at Wunderlich Field.
The Oaks were undone by a big inning in losing the first game of the day 7-1, and then dropped the nightcap 4-1despite pounding out seven hits.
Game one was scoreless through three innings before Academy of Art came through with a four-run outburst that opened the scoring. The first six Urban Knights batters of the inning reached courtesy of four singles, a double, and a Menlo error. Sierrah Garcia's two-run single gave Academy of Art all the cushion it would need.
Menlo responded in the home half of the inning. Senior Alisha Vegas was hitting by a pitch with one out that Nadia Le'i followed with a single to left field. Joedee Lovell lined a double into the right-center gap to plat Vegas and move Le'i to third base. It was a golden opportunity for the Oaks to get even on the scoreboard, but Tenea Golson popped out and Ululani Reyes followed an Amanda Vegas walk with a fielder's choice putout that ended the threat.
The Urban Knights added two more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to put the game away. Menlo was retired in order in its final three at bats.
Le'i finished 2-for-2 while Angela Woerz singled in her first at bat.
In the second game of the day Menlo jumped on top early and remained a threat to the very end thanks to the solid pitching of freshman Mikayela Viramontes.
Woerz lined a one-out single to center field in the top of the first inning to get the Oaks started and moved up a base when Jamie Pauley drew a walk. Courtney Emry smacked a base hit over shortstop Shampayne Clay's glove to plate Woerz with the game's initial run. Pauley showed some aggressive base running on an Alisha Vegas ground ball, but wasn't rewarded when she was thrown out at home plate. Le'i ended the inning with a strikeout and the Oaks inability to add additional runs proved costly.
Academy of Art quickly loaded the bases in the top of the second inning thanks to a pair of Menlo infield errors and a perfect bunt by Garcia. The bases were loaded with one out when Ashley Lokey doubled to drive in two runs for a 2-1 cushion. The unearned runs ended up being all that Garcia, the Urban Knights starting pitcher would need.
The Oaks threatened in the third inning when Woerz doubled and Pauley singled with one out. Emry and Alisha Vegas each grounded out to end the threat, however. In the fifth it was Reyes and Pauley who were stranded after reaching on singles and in the sixth Le'i doubled and did not score.
Academy of Art pushed its lead to 4-1 in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Alana Aweau and a pair of singles.
Viramontes scattered 11 hits in going the distance in the nightcap, allowing only two earned runs with one strikeout and one walk.
Pauley finished 2-for-2 and Woerz was 2-for-4 to lead the Menlo offense.
Menlo is now 1-5 on the season and hosts Hope International for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Wednesday. Academy of Art is 5-5-1 overall.
