The second-seeded Oaks picked up where they left off in their last meeting with the seventh-seeded Bruins, defending all over the court to blow Bethany away. Menlo will likely get a chance for quick revenge against No. 3 Simpson in Friday's semifinal at Haynes-Prim Pavilion. The Red Hawks stormed back from 18 points down to defeat Menlo in the teams' regular season finale.
Menlo didn't get off to a fast start offensively against Bethany, but it didn't need to. It was a 10-6 Oaks lead six minutes in after the Bruins Stephanie Caldwell converted from the free throw line and Menlo really took over from there.
Senior forward Kelli Brull made a pair of free throws, Stephanie Truong drove for a score as she was fouled, and Gianna Covarelli took a pass from Brittany Taylor that she turned into three points for the Oaks first double-digit lead at 17-6 less than 90 seconds later. Brull and fellow senior Katelyn Guild each scored inside to push Menlo lead to 21-7 and the rout was on.
Bethany responded with the next four points, all of which meant little when the Oaks poured the 11 straight through the basket.
Senoj Jones kept the senior class going with a 3-pointer from a Brull assist and added a pull-up jumper. Truong split a pair at the line, but made up for her miss with a 3-pointer of her own off another Brull dish. Elisa Ayala scored on a putback to keep the run going and after the Bruins found a point at the charity stripe Brittany Taylor got a steal and a layup for Menlo largest lead of the half at 34-12. The Oaks led by 20 at the break.
Bethany's 3-for-21 effort from the field against the Oaks stifling defense was only a sign of what was to come after halftime when Menlo held the Bruins to 3-for-26 shooting. Thanks to that and a surging offense, Menlo made things ugly early in the second half.
Fueled by Jones, Brull, and Guild, Menlo ran off a 17-2 run right after the restart. Jones started the half with a 3-pointer, Brull two free throws, and Guild scored back-to-back baskets off assists from senior Carlie Stone. With the game well in hand the Oaks bench got busy with Taylor, Ayala, Jenna Marinaro, and Bianca Madrid scoring the next four baskets to put Menlo in front 51-16 with more than 12 minutes remaining.
In addition to limiting Bethany to just 12.8 percent shooting from the field, Menlo's defense forced the Bruins into 24 turnovers and helped the Oaks to a 41-32 rebounding advantage. All 14 Menlo players in uniform saw at least nine minutes of action with only Brull playing for 20.
Jones led all scorers with 12 points and had three steals. Madrid scored nine points with four rebounds off the bench while Brull and Truong netted eight points apiece. Elisa Ayala grabbed a team-high six rebounds. In all, 12 different Oaks scored at least three points.
Stephanie Nelson led Bethany with 10 points on 3-of-10 shooting. As a team the Bruins shot just 6-of-47 from the field.
Menlo improves to 14-12 on the season and will host the winner of the Simpson-Pacific Union game on Friday at a time to be determined. Bethany ends its season 4-21 overall.
