ATHERTON, Calif. - On the same night it advanced to the California Pacific Conference semifinals, the Menlo College women's basketball team received some more good news when the All-Cal Pac team was announced on Wednesday evening. Junior guard Stephanie Truong was named All-Cal Pac as well as the conference's Defender of the Year; senior forward Katelyn Guild earned All-Cal Pac recognition; and senior guard Senoj Jones was an Honorable Mention All-Cal Pac selection.
Guild and Jones were each Honorable Mention All-Cal Pac honorees last season in their first year at Menlo while Truong has excelled in her first year as a transfer. The Oaks (14-12) host Simpson (9-23) in the Cal Pac Tournament semifinals on Friday night at 7:30. The teams split the season series with Menlo winning at home 73-56 and losing 66-55 last Saturday after holding an 18-point lead.
Guild averaged 10.5 points and 8.7 rebounds during the regular season, both team bests. She led the Cal Pac in rebounding and ranked fifth in scoring average. In all, Guild totaled seven double-doubles, had 14 double-digit scoring games, and 10 games with at least 10 rebounds. Guild's 222 rebounds this season is the second highest single-season total in program history, and she ranks in the top five in career rebounds and top 10 in career field goal percentage.
Truong's season took off once Menlo entered Cal Pac play. The junior transfer from City College of San Francisco became a key scoring threat for the Oaks, averaging 11.0 points in conference action compared to 8.6 out of conference. Her playmaking ability off the dribble, when coupled with 39.5 percent shooting on 3-pointers, has made Truong one of the most well-rounded players in the conference. Defensively, Truong customarily guards the oppositions top perimeter threat and has her way more often than not, as her Defender of the Year award shows.
Jones has done a little bit of everything for Menlo, stepping up at big moments to lead the Oaks offense. An imposing guard, Jones finished third on the team with 8.0 points per game while grabbing 4.5 rebounds per outing, good for second on the squad. Her 2.4 assist average led Menlo and she added 34 steals and 15 3-pointers, covering the floor with her impact on the game. Jones ranks sixth all-time in assists at Menlo with 139 and counting.
The All-Cal Pac Team features 10 players while another nine received Honorable Mention. Holy Names and Cal Maritime led the way with three All-Cal Pac selections apiece. Holy Names' Lesley Vodicska was named Player of the Year, Cal Maritime's Alexsis Brown was the Newcomer of the Year, Nicole Aboumrad of William Jessup was Freshman of the Year, and Cal Maritime's David Covell was Coach of the Year.
