ATHERTON, Calif. - Another day at the ballpark, another victory over a nationally-ranked opponent. Menlo College followed a complete game from pitcher Brian Priestley to a 7-5 victory over No. 14 Pacific Lutheran and a series sweep on Sunday afternoon at Cartan Field.
The Oaks defeated the visiting Lutes twice on Saturday and improve to 9-8 on the season following their perfect weekend. Pacific Lutheran drops to 11-5 after losing more games in two days against Menlo than it had lost all season entering the series. The Lutes hadn't been swept in a series since dropping a three-gamer to Puget Sound on the final weekend of March 2006.
Menlo never trailed and didn't even record a base hit during its go-ahead rally in the fifth inning, but got a huge blast from Michael Brandi late in the game to deliver the cushion Priestley needed to pick up the win.
Still high off of Saturday's doubleheader sweep, Menlo got on the scoreboard in the first inning when Shane Parsons drew a two-out walk, moved to second base on a passed ball, and scored on Chris Mazza's single that dropped into left field.
Priestley cruised through the first two innings before facing adversity for the first time of the day in the third. Ryan Boyles hit a ball that Oaks left fielder Tyler Wilson couldn't corral with a dive near the fence and coasted into second with a double. Ben Shively followed with a single to right field and just like that it was 1-1. Priestley's always-composed demeanor never wavered and the left-hander induced three consecutive fly outs to right field to end the threat.
Menlo got its nose back in front in the bottom half of the inning. Wilson walked with one out, moved to second on a wild pitch, then to third on a Joel Hull ground out. Freshman Brad Binder came up with a clutch double the opposite way down the left-field line to give the Oaks another lead at 2-1.
Pacific Lutheran evened the score one last time when Dan Johansen drove a liner over the fence in left-center field for a solo home run, but the Lutes were forced to play catch-up down the stretch thanks in part to self-inflicted wounds.
Leading off the home half of the fifth inning, Oaks catcher Ty Finley earned a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Wilson. Hull was hit by a pitch to set up a force situation on the base paths. The Lutes got exactly what they wanted when Binder struck a hard hit ground ball that pulled shortstop Sammy Davis toward second base for what was assumed to be an easy, inning-ending double play. Davis booted the grounder and all runners were safe on the play.
Parsons followed with a sac fly to deep center which scored Finley and allowed Hull to take third base. The Oaks were then gifted another run when Nathan Eisenhauer uncorked a wild pitch that sent Hull racing home for a 4-2 Menlo lead. In the sixth inning, Menlo tallied another run when Kyle Wilkerson singled up the middle then advanced all the way around the bases thanks to three more Eisenhauer wild pitches for a 5-2 advantage through six innings.
Priestley cruised through the middle innings, retiring 11 out of 13 batters following Johansen's homer. Pacific Lutheran managed just a hit batter in the fifth and a single in the sixth during the stretch, but refused to lay down late in the game.
Josh Takayoshi started the eighth inning by reaching second on a wild throw from Oaks third baseman Michael Brandi. Ryan Frost then blooped a single into right field to put runners at the corners and the tying run at the plate with nobody out.
Again Priestley got out of the jam without breaking a sweat. Priestley got the 3-4-5 part of the Lutes batting order to ground into a fielder's choice that plated Takayoshi and fly out to Hull in center field twice to end the inning with the Oaks holding a 5-3 lead.
In control, but far from comfortable with a two-run lead against the highly-ranked Lutes, Menlo got an unexpected boost in its final at bat. With two out and no runners on, Wilkerson was hit by a pitch. Sam Dodge pinch ran for the designated hitter and promptly stole second before moving to third base on a passed ball. Dodge's hard work on the base paths proved unnecessary when Brandi made up for his error by scorching a home run deep to right-center that crept over the fence and put Menlo up 7-3.
Pacific Lutheran kept at Priestley in its last chance to salvage something from the weekend. Ryan Aratani stroked a single to center field to start the ninth inning before being forced out on a Blaine Myers fielder's choice. Myers moved to second on the play when Parsons couldn't hold onto C.J. Dailey's throw to first trying to complete the double play.
Pinch hitter Jaron Iwakami followed with a base hit that Brandi made a diving stop on down the line and prevented an extra-base hit. Shively then lined a double to right-center that made it a 7-5 game with just one out.
Priestley got Takayoshi to ground out to Brandi for the second out of the inning before Frost bounced a weak grounder to Dailey at second. Dailey made a great play, grabbing the ball with his base hand and making the throw to first, but Parsons couldn't hold onto the throw as he stretched off first base.
With the potential tying run on first base, Priestley got Davis to hit a grounder to Mazza that the shortstop flipped to Dailey at second base for the force out that ended the game and the series.
Mazza finished 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead Menlo at the plate. The Oaks were limited to only five hits on the day with hits from Binder, Wilkerson, and Brandi all playing a key role in the victory.
Priestley needed just 86 pitches to get through the first eight innings before using 35 more to get through the ninth. He allowed four earned runs on nine hits without a walk and struck out two. It was Priestley's second straight complete game.
Menlo returns to action on Friday when it plays at Redlands at 9:30 a.m. and at La Verne the same day at 2:30 p.m.
