REDLANDS, Calif. - Michael Brandi smashed his second home run of the day in the top of the 10th inning to provide the winning margin as Menlo College bounced back after blowing a late six-run lead to defeat Redlands 9-6 on Friday morning.
The Oaks let a 6-0 lead slip away over the seventh and eighth innings, but refused to open its weekend trip on a deflating note. Shane Parsons led off the 10th inning with a walk and Chris Mazza followed with a single to left field. C.J. Dailey moved both runners over with a sacrifice bunt that prompted the Bulldogs to intentionally walk designated hitter Kyle Wilkerson to load the bases.
Menlo's rally was put in jeopardy when Parsons was caught in a run down between third base and home plate, but Brandi saved the Oaks with a three-run blast to right-center field
Brandi got Menlo on the scoreboard in the second inning when he followed a Wilkerson two-out walk with his first home run of the game, also to the opposite field. The led 2-0 thanks to Brandi's second home run in as many plate appearances dating to the Oaks series finale last Sunday versus nationally-ranked Pacific Lutheran.
Thanks to a strong effort on the mound from starter Adam Koontz, Menlo held onto its 2-0 advantage heading into the sixth inning when it seemingly put the game out of reach.
Brad Binder and Parsons clubbed back-to-back singles with one out and were both in scoring position following a wild pitch. Mazza struck out swinging, but C.J. Dailey picked him up with a single up the middle that scored Binder and Parsons to double the Oaks cushion.
Dailey stole second base and scored on a Wilkerson single to left field. Brandi reached on an infield error that allowed both runners to move into scoring position before Wilkerson scored on a wild pitch. Menlo led 6-0 through six innings.
Redlands strung four hits together to open the bottom of the seventh inning, including a key three-run home run by Nate Carlson to cut the Oaks lead in half. The Bulldogs scored four times in the inning and tied the score in the eighth thanks to three Menlo errors during the two-inning rally.
Koontz allowed three earned runs on eight hits over 6 2/3 innings, striking out three without a walk. Brendan Moe picked up the victory in relief, going the final 2 2/3 innings without surrendering a run.
Brandi finished the game 2-for-5 with five RBI's while Dailey was 2-for-4 with two RBI's. Joel Hull, Ty Finley, and Tyler Wilson also added one base hit apiece to the Oaks total.
La Verne 4, Menlo 0: At La Verne, the Oaks wasted a strong pitching performance by freshman starter Derek Martinez, failing to bring their run-scoring ability with them on the short drive from Redlands.
Martinez limited the Leopards to three runs on seven hits over seven innings of work on the mound. He struck out six and walked three before handing the ball to reliever Ray Lozada, who allowed one earned run in two innings.
Menlo finished with the same number of hits (9) as La Verne, but couldn't push across a single run. Mazza and Parsons each had two base hits in the game with Mazza smacking a triple. Hull, Binder, Brandi, Finley and Wilson each singled.
La Verne scored one run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly, added a second run in the third inning on a walk and a double, and score later in the same inning on another sac fly.
Menlo is now 10-9 on the season and plays at No. 10 Pomona-Pitzer (15-5) on Saturday at 10 a.m. La Verne is 11-8 overall.
