CLAREMONT, Calif. - Menlo College struggled at the plate and lost its final two games of its four-game tour of Southern California, falling 8-1 to No. 10 Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday and 10-4 to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Sunday.
 

The Oaks allowed a pair of runs to Pomona-Pitzer (17-5) in the second inning and trailed the rest of the way. Playing as the home team, Menlo answered with its only run later in the inning, but managed just four hits on the day.

 

Freshman Sean Sweeney started on the mound for the Oaks, allowing four earned runs on eight hits over 6 1/3 innings against the highly-touted Sagehens. Darren Takasaki gave up one earned run on two hits in 1 2/3 innings while Travis Anders and Chris Cleary combined to pitch the final scoreless inning.

 

Chris Mazza was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, stolen base, and the only Oaks run. Joel Hull and Jonathan Ochoa each singled.

 

On Sunday, Menlo scored three times in the first inning, but gave the runs right back and scored just once over the final eight innings in a loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (12-9).

 

Michael Brandi was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI to lead the Oaks offense. C.J. Dailey finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and Brad Binder was 2-for-5. Shane Parsons had a base hit and one RBI while Hull, Mazza, and Ochoa each singled once.

 

Brian Priestley was the losing pitcher, allowing 10 earned runs on 14 hits over 6 1/3 innings. Brendan Moe went the final 1 2/3 innings without allowing a hit.

 

Menlo is now 10-11 on the season and travels to Forest Grove, Ore. For a four-game series against Pacific beginning Saturday at 12 p.m. with a doubleheader. The teams will play another twinbill on Sunday at 11 a.m.
