FOREST GROVE, Ore. - Wet weather delayed the start time, but had no chance of slowing down Menlo College as it swept a doubleheader from Pacific in grand fashion Saturday afternoon. The Oaks stormed to 16-0 and 17-3 victories on the day.
As if the 33 runs on 35 hits weren't indicative enough of Menlo's dominant effort, the Oaks got a complete-game shutout from lefty Brian Priestley in the opener and seven innings of two-run ball from Adam Koontz in the nightcap. The Oaks scored more than one run in seven separate innings while Pacific managed just three one-run innings during the doubleheader.
Menlo got started early in both contests, scoring eight first-inning runs over the two games and never led by fewer than three runs.
In the opener the Oaks scored three times in the first and added five more in the fifth to give Priestley more than enough cushion to close the game out. A four-run sixth inning put Menlo up 12-0 before three runs in the eighth and another in the ninth pushed the difference into absurdist territory.
Priestley allowed eight hits - all singles - in going the distance, striking out seven with one walk. At the plate the Oaks put on a hitting clinic: Shane Parsons was 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI's, Michael Brandi was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI's, Ty Finley was 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI, Brad Binder was 3-for-6 with a double and an RBI, and Joel Hull was 2-for-5 with a triple and three RBI's. Sam Dodge had an RBI single while Chris Mazza tripled. CJ Dailey, Kyle Wilkerson, and Taylor Cohn each singled once.
The nightcap was hardly more competitive thanks to Koontz strong effort on the mound and another nine-inning barrage by Menlo's offense.
The Oaks scored five times in the first frame and scored seven times in the sixth inning to take a 14-2 lead. One run in the seventh and two more in the eighth gave Menlo a 17-2 advantage and closed out the Oaks scoring.
Mazza and Hull led Menlo's batting attack, each finishing the game 4-for-6. Mazza's line included a double, triple, and three RBI's while Hull led off the game with a double. Wilkerson was 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI's, Parsons was 2-for-3 with two RBI's, and Will Ireton was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Jonathan Ochoa singled and drove in a pair while Dailey singled.
Sunday's doubleheader was rained out with no plans to reschedule the games for another date.
Menlo is 12-11 on the season and returns to action on Thursday with an 11 a.m. doubleheader against St. Joseph's (NY) at Cartan Field. Pacific is 6-18 overall.
