ATHERTON, Calif. - Jonathan Ochoa hit a walk-off single to back up seven scoreless innings from starting pitcher Brian Priestley as Menlo College snuck past St. Joseph's 1-0 en route to a doubleheader and series sweep on Friday afternoon at Cartan Field. The Oaks won the finale 11-2.
Ochoa's base hit was just the sixth of the game for Menlo, though it was the third consecutive hit in the inning. All of the offensive fireworks the Oaks showed on Thursday were noticeably absent in Friday's opener. Entering the home half of the seventh and final inning - both ends of the doubleheader were scheduled for seven innings in an effort to beat the rain - Menlo had managed just three singles.
Designated hitter Kyle Wilkerson opened the winning rally with a line drive double to the wall in left-center field. That chased St. Joseph's starter Danny Contant and brought on reliever Paul Piccirillo. Ty Finley then struck a single to center that moved pinch runner Sam Dodge to third base. With the Bears infield drawn in, Ochoa hit a hard ground ball through the left side of the infield to plate Dodge with the winning run.
Menlo was able to get away with its miniscule scoring thanks to Priestley, a left-handed senior. Priestley never faced more than four batters in an inning and only saw two more than the minimum for a seven-inning game. He allowed just two infield singles while striking out eight and walking one.
Contant kept the Oaks bats at bay until Wilkerson's rally starter. Contant allowed one run on four hits over six-plus innings of work as the tough luck loser.
Finley finished 2-for-3 to lead Menlo's batting attack while C.J. Dailey and Chris Mazza each singled.
Things returned to normal for the Oaks lineup in the nightcap thanks in large part to a seven-run third inning.
St. Joseph's took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Joe Saez doubled, moved to third base on an Anthony Longone sacrifice bunt, and scored on a two-out infield single by Alvaro Quinones. But the Bears lead was only a mirage.
With the Oaks playing as the visitor, Dailey led off the top of the third inning with a walk. After stealing second base and moving to third on an errant pick-off throw, Dailey tied the score when Shane Parsons singled to right field. Mazza, Michael Brandi, Brad Binder, and Wilkerson drew consecutive walks to give Menlo a 3-1 lead and knock Bears starting pitcher Mykelle Cortez from the game.
Finley knocked a one-run single to left field of Piccirillo and Ochoa walked to push another run across and keep the bases loaded. Joel Hull looped a double down the left-field line that plated Wilkerson and Finley for a 7-1 cushion. Piccirillo ended the damage by retiring three straight batters to end the inning.
Menlo added two runs in the fourth inning when Brandi singled and Binder doubled with none out. Wilkerson drew a walk to fill the bases before Richie Pombo popped a ball that was ruled an infield fly, though it fell and allowed Brandi to score from third. Hull hit a sacrifice fly to left that plated Binder for a 9-1 lead.
The Oaks scored twice in the seventh thanks to four straight singles. Parsons came around to score on a Brandi line drive to right-center while Mazza scored on a Binder hit to right.
Adam Koontz was the winning pitcher for Menlo, allowing two runs on four hits over five innings. Koontz struck out six and walked three. Darren Takasaki and Mazza each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
Binder finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI's while Parsons, Brandi, and Finley each had two hits and one RBI. Hull had three RBI's in the game.
Menlo improves to 16-11 on the season and will host No. 3 Chapman (D3Baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25 Poll) for a four-game series beginning with a single game at 2:30 p.m. on Friday. St. Joseph's is 3-11 and will play a doubleheader against Academy of Art at 12 p.m. on Saturday at Cartan Field.
