ATHERTON, Calif. - A pair of big innings by the team in the other dugout helped to spoil Menlo College's Senior Day as the Oaks fell in both ends of a California Pacific Conference doubleheader to Holy Names on Saturday at Wunderlich Field.
Menlo dropped the opener 8-0, though it was still a two-run game entering the seventh inning, and lost the nightcap 6-1 after stranding nine base runners. The Oaks honored seniors Alisha Vegas, Jamie Pauley, Courtney Emry, and Angela Woerz before the first game. They will play one more home doubleheader when the Oaks host CSU East Bay in a non-conference tilt on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
Both teams began the day locked up in a pitchers' duel. Menlo's Jessica Cobb matched Holy Names ace Stephani Fairclough nearly pitch for pitch through five innings of a scoreless contest. Cobb got out of bases loaded jams in the first and fifth to keep the hitless Oaks in the game.
Holy Names finally broke through in the sixth inning when Samantha Fisher popped a home run the opposite way over the left-field fence for a 2-0 lead. The Hawks put the game out of reach in the seventh when Fisher drove in two more runs with a ground-rule double and Allison Snider clubbed a grand slam to left-center.
Menlo had just four batters reach base in the game. Emry walked in the second inning, Nadia Le'i walked in the third, Tenea Golson got the Oaks lone base hit with a single up the middle in the fifth, and Emry reached on an error in the seventh. Fairclough struck out eight to get the win.
Cobb allowed eight runs on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings. She struck out two and walked six.
The Oaks created plenty of chances in the nightcap, but met the same fate. Seven different players combined to pound out nine hits, but potential big innings in the third, fifth, and sixth were thwarted by fine Hawks defense or self-inflicted wounds.
Holy Names jumped in front in the first inning with all the runs it would need. Snider, Rachael Martinez, and Kara Ferguson each had an RBI single in the frame, staking Holy Names to a 3-0 advantage.
After the Hawks added a fourth run in the third inning, Menlo got on the scoreboard.
Le'i led off with a no-doubter to left field that cleared the fence with plenty of room to spare, drawing the Oaks within three runs with the homer. Adriana Garcia followed with a single up the middle and it looked like Menlo might make some noise.
Leadoff batter Ululani Reyes then hit a line drive that Hawks second baseman Jessica Merriam caught on the dive. Garcia was then caught stealing to clear the bases and kill the threat.
It was 5-1 in the fifth inning when the Oaks again stumbled with a chance to draw closer to Holy Names.
Le'i singled to center and Garcia was hit by a pitch with nobody out. Reyes then placed down a perfect sacrifice bunt that would've advanced both runners with ease, but when Reyes backtracked trying to allow the runners time to move she was called out automatically and the runner had to return to first and second, respectively.
Serina Stephens slapped a single into left field just pitches later, but Le'i was thrown out at home plate trying to score from second. Woerz then struck out to end the inning.
Menlo loaded the bases with two down in the sixth inning on singles by Joedee Lovell, Amanda Vegas, and Le'i, but stranded them when Garcia grounded into a fielder's choice put out.
Le'i finished the game 3-for-3 with an RBI for Menlo. Reyes, Stephens, Woerz, Lovell, Vegas, and Garcia each singled once. Mikayela Viramontes was the losing pitcher, allowing six runs - five earned - on 13 hits while striking out three and walking one.
Menlo is now 1-13 in the Cal Pac and 6-28 overall. Following Wednesday's home finale, the Oaks travel to Scotts Valley to take on Cal Pac foe Bethany in their season finale next Saturday at 12 p.m.
