LOS ANGELES - Junior Adam Koontz continued his splendid form on the mound by tossing a complete-game no-hitter as Menlo College roughed up Occidental 15-0 in a seven-inning game shortened by a 10-run mercy rule on Tuesday afternoon.
Koontz surrendered leadoff walks in the fourth and sixth innings after Occidental's first batter of the game reached on an error, but the Tigers never touched him for a base hit. The powerful right-hander struck out seven and walked two, improving his record to 7-2 which gives Koontz the third highest number of wins by an Oaks pitcher in a season.
The result of Koontz' dominance was no fluke. Over his last five appearances - all starts - Koontz has a 4-0 record with a 1.84 earned run average over 34.2 innings. Opponents have managed just seven earned runs on 21 hits during the stretch while Koontz has struck out 25 and walked 13. On the season, Koontz has a 3.36 ERA and a 2.4 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Even worse for Occidental was the fact that Menlo's offense erupted for the second consecutive day. The Oaks banged out 11 hits and took a commanding 12-0 advantage thanks to an eight-run third inning.
Menlo scored twice in the first inning thanks to the Tigers own struggles. The Oaks loaded the bases with walks before Brad Binder hit into a fielder's choice that scored Joel Hull. Will Ireton then walked to push Chris Mazza across home plate to make it 2-0.
Tyler Wilson doubled to start the second inning and later scored on a C.J. Dailey sacrifice fly out. Hull singled and scored on a Mazza ground out.
Menlo used six hits and an error to blow the game open in the fourth. The Oaks had five RBI base hits in the inning and had way more runs on the scoreboard than Koontz would need.
Binder finished 2-for-5 with three RBI's while Hull was 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Wilson was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Mazza and Ireton each had one hit and three RBI's, and Ty Finley drove in a pair.
Menlo is now 19-14 on the season and host Whitman (4-28) in their season finale this weekend. The Oaks scheduled game against Bethany set for Wednesday has been canceled. Menlo and Whitman will face off in 12 p.m. doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's games will coincide with Senior & Alumni Day. Occidental is 13-22 overall.
