ATHERTON, Calif. - The runs finally dried up for Menlo College when they were needed most on Sunday afternoon, but the Oaks still managed to split its home finale doubleheader to take their series against Whitman at Cartan Field.

Menlo won the opener 8-3 behind another strong pitching performance by senior Brian Priestley, who allowed just three hits and no runs over six innings. The Oaks dropped the nightcap 15-7 as Whitman pounded out 21 hits and took advantage of four errors.

The Oaks are now 22-15 overall and hope to pick up currently unscheduled games on the road next week in an effort to increase their chances of qualifying for the NCAA Div. III postseason. Whitman is 5-31 overall.

While Menlo's offense wasn't as prolific on Sunday as it had been in its series-opening sweep the day before, it didn't have to be in game one. Priestley cruised through six inning of work and the Oaks led from the first inning on.

Leadoff batter Joel Hull got things going in the opening frame when he reached on a two-base error. The speedy center fielder stole third base before scoring on a Chris Mazza single to left.

Menlo tallied three runs in the second inning to take control. Brad Binder walked and Ty Finley followed with a single to left. With two down, Hull bounced a grounder through the right side of the infield to plate Binder and double the Oaks advantage. C.J. Dailey then lined a double down the left-field line that extended Menlo's cushion to 4-0.

Shane Parsons led off the third inning with a no-doubter of a home run to left-center. Two more home runs provided the Oaks final three runs, all in the sixth inning. Mazza backed up a Dailey walk with a homer to left and Michael Brandi crushed a solo shot two batters later that traveled across the road beyond the trees that line the outfield fence. Menlo led 8-0.

Priestley struck out one and didn't issue a walk. Nick Vandever came on to pitch the final three innings, allowing three runs on as many hits while striking out four.

Mazza led Menlo at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a home run, double, and three RBI's. Brandi had two hits in the game.

The Menlo offense found itself playing catch-up almost from the start of game two. Whitman scored six times in the second inning to break open a scoreless game and added five more in the fourth for an 11-3 lead. The Oaks were never closer than seven runs down after that.

Parsons ended the nightcap 3-for-5 with a triple and two RBI's. Binder had two hits, including a triple and two RBI's, and also showed off his arm by gunning down a runner trying to advance to third base on a single to right field. Mazza and Finley each had two hits and two RBI's in the game.
